Memory is no exception, and for the most part, has done quite well so far--actually it is ahead of the game right now.
With its release of DDR 500MHz memory modules, single and double, motherboards and processors were pushing 800MHz Front Side Bus speeds.
When such memory is released, the consumer could purchase memory that would support current technology, and future technology, but there's only a benefit if the makers will offer those bus speeds in the near future--most of the time they do.

This is the equivalent of 166Mhz FSB, as DDR memory is double the rate of the FSB of the processor.
I had to change the memory from synchronous with the FSB to a 5:4 ratio, allowing the processor to run at 200MHz (remember, P4's are quad-pumped, so this equates out to 800MHz FSB as advertised) and the memory at 333Mhz, which is 2 * 166Mhz, which is 5/4th's of 200.
If you buy generic memory, you can get the speeds that the modules are rated for, but the timings will be much looser than with the better memory.
