Corsair pilots established a very satisfactory kill ratio against Japanese fighters, and helped turn the tide in the Solomons (and later battles).
Although U.S. Navy and Marine pilots operated the Corsair from a multitude of airfields hewn from Pacific atolls, it wasn't until April 1944 that the Navy cleared the powerful fighter for shipboard use.
The Corsair was, without a doubt, one of the great fighters of WW II, and just about the first carrier based fighter that could hold its own with the best land based fighters.

With 60 degrees of flaps, the corsair was capable of flying at speeds slow enough for carrier landings, and the streamline design gave it the title of "first 400+mph carrier borne aircraft".
Corsairs were flown by the famous Black Sheep Squadron VMF-214 led by Marine Fighter Ace Maj. Gregory "Pappy" Boyington in an area of the Solomon Islands called The Slot.
However by the time the Corsairs arrived, there were virtually no Japanese aircraft left in New Zealand's allocated sectors of the Southern Pacific, and despite the RNZAF Squadrons extending their operations to more northern islands, the Corsairs were primarily used for close support of American, Australian and New Zealand soldiers fighting the Japanese.

The Corsair was a major player in air races for several years, until serious accidents led to the effective suspension of air racing in the early 1950s.
Although the radar pod apparently did not greatly interfere in the Corsair's maneuverability, the radar set was relatively fragile, and Corsair night fighter pilots were not inclined to jink their aircraft around unless absolutely necessary.

I was flying in a corsair of course, otherwise chances are good the dog fight wouldnt have lasted as long as it did (what other US Navy plane in FH even stands a chance???), and the pilot I was up against was pretty good.
Or rather have an f6f Hellcat as the fighter, a corsair as the fighter/bomber, and either the Douglas TBD-1 Devastator or the Grumman TBF Avenger as the torpedo bomber onboard the carriers.
In fact, even though it is one of the greatest manuverable and wll armed fighters that saw action in the pacific, it has a major weakness, and it is that the Japanese sacrificed armor plating on the plane altogether for weight reduction.

This site is only dived on request by groups of 6 or more, for an additional charge, as it is unsuitable for snorkellers and about 20 minutes further drive from where "Golden Wing" is normally based.
Between dives there is time to explore either the beautiful Kakula Island, or if the tide allows, a dinghy trip across to where one of the other Corsairs crashed on that fateful day - although there's little now left of the aircraft.
