Umbar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These new Corsairs were cruel slavers who often raided the coasts of Belfalas and Anfalas in Gondor: in T.A 2746 for example, Amrothos, the 15th Prince of Dol Amroth fell defending Dol-en-Ernil against them.
Umbar's fleet was largely destroyed 29 years later, when Thorongil (Aragorn Elessar, as it later turned out) in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II led a taskforce south and burned them, killing the Captain of the Haven in the process.
Umbar appeared on the bottom edge of the maps found in earlier editions of Lord of the Rings, but it is absent from modern editions, which regrettably map a slightly smaller area of Middle-earth.

 Bambooweb: Umbar
Umbar had been built by the Númenóreans in the year 3220 of the Second Age, and like the havens of Pelargir and Lond Daer later grew into a fortress from which Númenórean influence spread over Middle-earth.
During the early Third Age Umbar was an important enemy of Gondor, and the province of Harondor or South Gondor was contested between the realms.
Umbar was destroyed once again in 2980, when the great warrior Thorongil (Aragorn Elessar, as it later turned out) in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II led a taskforce south and killed the Captain of the Haven.

The Corsair Reis (the reis was captain or commander of a Corsair vessel), on the other hand, were privateers; they made war only on enemies of their prince or their god.
Like the pirate's ship, the Corsair vessel usually was a private venture rather than a public charge, but the Corsair carried a commission that legitimized their activities, and they disposed of their prizes in a manner regulated by their prince.
Corsair - This term was used for Christian and Muslim privateers in the Mediterranean between the 16th and 19th centuries.

Not to worry, as far as I know, the Corsairs of Umbar are in the movie (unless, once again, they were cut, but that seems unlikely, and I hope I'm right).
Also, PJ did shoot a short sequence where he did a cameo, appearing as one of the corsairs and fighting one of the main characters.

Rotten Tomatoes Forums - LOTR-ROTK Screening discussion 37. The Corsairs of Umbar*
I think if you cut the end of the PotD it needs to be at the same point as in the TE as there we go from an undesided dead to a attacking dead, a pretty easy leap of logic.
If you include the exit from the PotD but not the "we fight" or the Corsairs then you suddenly go from a dead refusing to fight to one leaping out of the boats which is too great a leap if you ask me.
I don't think much of the scene but I don't think that foreknowledge of the dead really damages the tension a great deal as their arrival isnt really a tension builder like that of the Rohirrim(plus were not told their actually coming).

Enemy of the Dúnedain of Arnor was for most of the Third Age the Witch-kingdom of Angmar; the people of Gondor had the Corsairs of Umbar for enemies ever since the Kin-strife.
