Cortaderia is a genus of 20-25 species of grasses, native to South America (15-20 species), New Zealand (four species) and New Guinea (one species).
The species of Cortaderia are imposing tall grasses growing 1.5-3 m tall, with graceful white inflorescence plumes.
They are in widespread use as ornamental plants in horticultural use.

 Cortaderia species (Pampas Grass) - Sustainable Gardening Australia
Three species of Pampas grass (Cortaderia) have become environmental weeds in Australia, but Cortaderia jubata (Pink pampas grass) is the most aggressive of the three.
It is the most common weedy Cortaderia in NSW and Victoria, and is replacing White pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana) as the major weedy Cortaderia in Tasmania.
Pampas grass is a declared weed in Tasmania, so its sale or distribution is illegal and landholders have a responsibility to eradicate it from their land.

Cortaderia selloana was introduced by a Scottish horticulturist, James Tweedie.
He became the head gardener at Edinburgh Botanical Garden, and, in 1825 at the age of fifty, emigrated to Argentina.
The botanical name Cortaderia comes from an Argentine word for these plants, and selloana commemorates another botanist that collected in South America, Friedrich Sellow.

Some of the newly introduced cortaderia's are sterile so that helps with the invasiveness problem but there is still those razor sharp leaves to contend with.
