Camillo Golgi Biography | World of Anatomy and Physiology
Golgi's silver stain received a somewhat lukewarm reception by his colleagues, perhaps due to the fact that it was difficult to replicate precisely.
Golgi also described the quotidian fever, which he believed was caused by a double infection of the tertian parasite; and the estivo-autumnal type of malaria, which he described as an altogether separate type of malaria.
The Golgi apparatus appears as a fine network of interlaced threads shown by Golgi and his students to be a consistent component in a variety of cell tissues.

Life and Discoveries of Camillo Golgi
Golgi graduated in 1865 and was, therefore, a student during the last years of the fights for the independence of Italy (Italy became united in 1870).
Golgi established in the Institute of General Pathology a very active laboratory, with international contacts, and was especially gifted in stimulating his students and foreign guests, including the Norwegian histologist and explorer Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930), Nobel Laureate in Peace 1922.
Golgi's discovery of the fl reaction and his subsequent investigations provided a substantial contribution to the advancement of the knowledge on the structural organization of the nervous tissue.

 Camillo Golgi (1843-1926)
Most of his scientific research involved the nervous system, the causes of insanity, neurology, and the “lymphatics of the brain.” Golgi became interested in malaria and its causes and he later distinguished three forms of the parasite and three types of fever (“Camillo,”2003).
In 1873, Golgi discovered a silver chromate method for staining individual nerve and cell structures call the “fl reaction.” The method uses a diluted solution of silver nitrate and is valuable in tracing the processes and slightest implications of cells (“Camillo,” 2003).
Golgi shared the Nobel Prize with Santiago Ramon y Cajal in 1906 for their work on the nervous system (“Camillo,” 2003).

From Bizzozero Golgi acquired a passion for histological investigation, the direct means of penetrating the formidable unknown of the architecture of the nervous system, that 'object' whose hidden structure enclosed the secret of all psychic and behavioural phenomena.
Furthermore he performed studies on the structure of the cerebellum (Figure 2) (describing the so-called Golgi cells of the cerebellar cortex) and olfactory bulbs, and observed striatal and cortical lesions in a case of chorea.
Thereafter Golgi returned to the study of the nervous system and using a variant of his fl reaction he was able to observe, in 1897, a 'reticulum' in the cytoplasm of cells of spinal ganglia, the so-call 'internal reticular apparatus', subsequently christened the 'Golgi apparatus' or 'Golgi complex'.

Golgi himself stated that Bizzozero greatly influenced him and his methods of scientific research; at that time most of his investigations were concerned with the nervous system, i.e.
In 1872 he accepted the post of Chief Medical Officer at the Hospital for the Chronically Sick at Abbiategrasso, and it is believed that in the seclusion of this hospital, in a little kitchen which he had converted into a laboratory, he first started his investigations into the nervous system.

Bartolomeo Camillo Golgi was born, the third of four sons, in Corteno (today Corteno Golgi), a small mountain village in the province of Brescia, Italy on 7 July 1843 (Figure 1).
Aided by his fl reaction, Golgi, while in Abbiategrasso, discovered the branching of the axon and the fact that dendrites are not fused in a network.
In Golgi’s laboratory Carlo Martinotti identified the cell named after him in the cerebral cortex, Aldo Perroncito described the phases of regeneration in the nerves, Emilio Veratti observed the sarcoplasmic reticulum and Adelchi Negri discovered the intraneuronal inclusions (the Negri bodies) in animals and humans infected with the rabies virus (Figure_6).

The discovery of Golgi cells led the German anatomist Wilhelm von Waldeyer-Hartz (1836-1921) to postulate in 1891 that the nerve cell is the basic structural unit of the nervous system, a critical point in the development of modern neurology.
He took an active part in public life; he was especially concerned with public health, and became a senator in 1900.
The fourth volume was edited by Golgi's co-workers (L. Sala, E. Veratti, G. Sala) and appeared in 1929.

Having graduated in medicine in 1865, Golgi originally intended to become an honest doctor but soon discovered a vocation for scientific research that was inspired further by the contagious charm of Lombroso, with his eclectic personality and enthusiasm.
Nevertheless, Lombroso’s strange personality and methodological flaws soon revealed themselves to the meticulous Golgi; disappointed by Lombroso’s lack of scientific discipline, Golgi began attending the General Pathology Institute run by Giulio Bizzozero, a young revolutionary of Italian medicine whose emblem was the microscope.
Thanks to his ability to correlate the variability of haematological structures to the clinical form of the illness, Golgi was able to reveal the secret of fever intermittency.
