Although the Cortland Standard is one of the community’s oldest institutions, the newspaper, in a sense, remains as new as today’s edition.
Known as the “Cortland County Standard,” the newspaper was established in June of 1867 as a weekly by Francis G. Kinney.
The Cortland Standard, which is one of the few remaining family-owned newspapers in New York state, continues to be published under the ownership of members of the Clark family.

The eastern boundary of Tryon County was approximately five miles west of the present city of Schenectady, and the county included the western part of the Adirondack Mountains and the area west of the West Branch of the Delaware River.

Cortland was established in the fall of 1883 at the time of the construction of the Omaha and Republican Valley Railroad, in Highland Township near the north line of Gage County (which was in "Clay" until 1863).
By 1911 the population in Cortland had dropped to 364, as many had moved to Wisconsin or Kansas.
While many things have changed in Cortland from when it started, it is still a comfortable small town in which to live.

The boundaries of the new county differed little from those of the present which are: On the north by Onondaga County; on the east by Madison and Chenango; on the south by Broome and Tioga; and on the west by Tompkins and Cayuga.
The surface of the county is made up of hilly ranges, broad, level plains, and an elevated plateau in the northern section with a ridge on the extreme north side which is the dividing point of the waters which flow to Lake Ontario and those which go to join the Susquehanna River.
Until the railroad period, the growth within Cortland had been that of the slow establishment of clearing lands, starting industries, creation of schools and churches, in other words, the establishment of the foundations on which might safely be built the future prosperity.

The county would need to negotiate the difference between that appraisal and any appraisal offered by Beaudry to reach a final price, and if no agreement can be reached, a judge would settle the issue, Van Donsel said.
County Administrator Scott Schrader said he did not expect an appraisal to be ready in time for next week’s meeting, however he said he was hopeful Van Donsel would have one available in time for the July 27 session, to allow legislators to gauge how much the project would cost.
