The little market town of Corwen, nestled in the Dee Valley claims fame as the place where Welsh patriot Owain Glyndwr gathered his army for the assault on Shrewsbury during his rebellion in 1400.
A more modern claim to fame for Corwen dates from 1789 when an Eisteddfod was arranged at the Owain Glyndwr Hotel by London Welshmen anxious to revive the ancient bardic customs of Wales.
Corwen is reached on the A483 from Wrexham and the A5 from Llangollen.

At a meeting of the newly elected Board of Guardians on 9th January 1837, it was decided to erect a new Workhouse at the location known as "Ty hiont yr Aber" meaning "between the turnpike and the Town of Corwen"

The nearby cross shaft of Eliseg's Pillar, which dates from the ninth century, has some things in common with the Corwen cross - a plain lower shaft, with four panels at the top of the shaft, each of which is surrounded by a raised cartouche border.
