This Cosby show is undeserved - The Boston Globe
Perhaps if Cosby had made his comments on a comedy stage instead of at a tony event attended by, among others, NAACP president Kweisi Mfume and Howard University president H. Patrick Swygert, people would be laughing more and criticizing less.
Cosby, meanwhile, has been lambasted as a man who, having achieved his own successes, is now sneering at those still clamoring to get out of dire situations.
Had a white person made comments similiar to those expressed by Cosby, without fail he or she would have been strong-armed into an apology (whether or not such amends were made out of sincere regret or hasty self-preservation).

By simple standards of civility Cosby is guilty of an extreme lapse in “personal responsibility” by dint of his behavior to his audience and to the millions of people he slandered.
Cosby advocates a neutered Black politics of individual striving within the parameters that are allowed by those in power.  He projects his own, self-invented persona as a “role model” for African Americans to follow as individuals, while rejecting collective action to alter power relationships.
However, Cosby’s inability to perceive that he is obligated as a matter of “personal responsibility” to atone for his blanket verbal assaults, is his personal problem.

 CMT.com : Bill Cosby : Biography
Before Cosby, fl comics were largely relegated to the so-called "chitlin circuit" of fl nightclubs and theaters, their albums banned from white-owned record stores; after Cosby, comedians of all racial and cultural backgrounds found a home in the mainstream, and were even given the opportunity to prove their talents in major film and television roles.
Cosby quickly distinguished himself from his peers in a number of ways: not only did his relaxed, conversational style rely on warm, anecdotal childhood recollections instead of one-liners and gags, but unlike other fl comedians, he refused to tell racial jokes or use profanities, establishing himself as a talent suitable for all ages and backgrounds.
With the program, Cosby suffered his first major artistic setback; although NBC committed to two seasons of the show, ratings were weak, and at the end of the two-year period NBC pulled the plug.
