Cosgrove, a former All-Yankee Conference quarterback and the Black Bears' offensive coordinator from 1989-92, was named the 34th head coach of the Black Bears on February 22, 1993.
Cosgrove coached the Yankee Conference's top offensive team, as the Black Bears averaged over 440 yards a game in total offense en route to a school-record nine wins, the Yankee Conference championship, and the school's second NCAA tournament appearance in three years.

The theme of the conference was “Peel Back the Label” referring to our concern that many people with learning difficulties are not seen as individuals in their own right but by the nature of their impairment and that this was an issue that had to be tackled somehow.
At the end of the day Cosgrove and its staff whether they were part of the team or assisted on the day gained tremendous praise from the delegates who numbered 140 for what they said was one of the most entertaining conferences they had attended.
In summary the conference was a great credit to the team and to Cosgrove and we all went off home with a feeling of smug self satisfaction at a job well done.
