Cosina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cosina is the successor to Nikō (or "Nikoh"), a company set up as a manufacturer of lenses in 1959.
Although the name Cosina has previously appeared on compact and SLR cameras for 135 film, it is best known as a manufacturer of cameras and camera components for other brands.
Cosina manufactures a Rollei-branded rangefinder camera, and is acknowledged to manufacture (and to have helped design) an Epson digital rangefinder camera as well.

Cosina manufactured bodies have worn names from A to Y through the years.
Based on your author's fading memories of 30 plus years ago, one of Cosina's first forays in the U.S. was in the form of the Argus STL-1000.
The Cosina branded camera was named Hi-Lite and a few found their way to the US in the hands of GIs returning from S.E. Asia.

 End of the Rangefinder Renaissance?
Despite the fact that there are claims out there that Cosina is doing a huge volume in rangefinders, I would be very surprised if sales numbers for their bodies (in the aggregate) approached 10,000 units.
Because few dealers stock the Cosina line, and because most sales seem to be occurring over (and as a result of conversations on) the Internet, it is entirely possible that the majority of Cosina users are represented on the various newsgroups (which comprise a couple of thousand people, even including common members).
The effect of Cosina's Leica-related product blitz (which can best be described as making one of everything within a 3-year period) raises the specter of creating this effect over a large number of products.

Speaking Frankly: The Contrary Mind of Hirofumi Kobayashi - - PopPhotoApril 2006
In the evening, engineers from the nearby Yashica, Cosina, Chinon or Olympus manufacturing plants dropped by for carp sashimi (and horse sashimi, for which the region is also known), and to watch Japanese baseball on TV.
But perhaps Cosina was best known for its 35mm SLR camera bodies: inexpensive center-the-needle TTL metering, flashless, basic.
Cosina later switched from viewfinder centering needle to green-red LEDs, and in time exchanged its all-mechanical metal blade focal plane shutter (1 to 1/2000 sec, X-sync) for an electronic one with aperture-priority autoexposure.

Cosina 19-35 vs. Sigma 18-50 - Canon Digital Photography Forums
Will the Cosina be an upgrade to the Sigma (wich is not that bad, but does show some CA and barrel distortion).
The Cosina is a reasonable budget lens, I would expect the Sigma to be better but cost more and the Canon to be better still and even more expensive.
The Cosina looked very soft to me on almost every picture I saw, while my Sigma sure is very soft wide-open at 50mm, but overall it's a pleasure to use.

 Leica FAQ - Voigtländer Bessa R2 & T notes
However in May 2001 Cosina started shipping the first M-lensmount version of their popular Bessar rangefinder camera, the Bessa T. Although everyone initially got excited, the lack of any viewfinder (the camera just had a rangefinder) again made the camera a bit of a dead-duck for real-world, practical photographers.
Cosina have also released a Bessa T "rapid winder" - a hand driven crank similar to the the Abrahamsson Rapidwinder.
In Oct 2001 Cosina released the collectors Bessa T "101 Heliar Edition" - available in navy blue, olive, grey or gloss fl with a collapsible 50mm ƒ3.5 lens.

Cosina has developed outstanding original optics technologies in the production of camera lenses while still maintaining a rigorous fidelity to the historic photography heritage.
Epson felt that if the companies were to use the rangefinder camera platform—a platform that is being left in the wake of progress toward the digital age—and if they were to merge Epson's digital image processing technology with Cosina's advanced optics technology, they might be able to discover some completely new creative photographic possibilities.

 Shutterbug: A New Rangefinder Camera
Kobayashi and his staff at Cosina came to realize that this was literally a new product, and not another line extension of the existing rangefinder camera series that Cosina was manufacturing like Bessa.
This meant to Cosina that thinking about almost every facet of the camera, such as the rangefinder system, film advance mechanism, and so on, should be started from scratch.
One thing that Cosina knew was that this development project would be worth all the time and effort that it would take.

From the minimal material published about them so far and Gandy's initial comments, it appears that the R4a and R4m are essentially R2a and R2m bodies (respectively) updated with a high-eyepoint,.52x viewfinder that has 21, 25, 28, 35, and 50mm framelines.

Opened in 1977 as one of the first tenants in KD Station, a 1920s meatpacking plant, Ruth's Cosina quickly grew a loyal following for its authentic tex-mex food, margaritas and ambiance of its fourth-floor dining areas, which featured fixtures salvaged from the slaughterhouse.
