The series has 50 episodes, aired in Japan from October 5, 2002 to September 27, 2003 at 6:00 PM on the JNN TV stations (Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS TV), Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS TV, producing TV station), etc.).
On one side is the Earth Alliance, and on the opposite is the space colonies that form ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty).

Unlike the Earth Federation of the Universal Century era which was a relatively unified body, the Earth Alliance is more of a loose international military confederation of entities that are often working at cross purposes to each other.
In the Cosmic Era, the present-day United Nations funded the idea of constructing new space colonies originally as manufacturing and research facilities.
As of late Cosmic Era 73, there is at least one PLANT located at L4, Armory One, a ZAFT military base.

I'm sorry, I really expected something funny out of this episode, but aside from the Nimoy intro, the exploding lie detector and a couple other small things this episode's jokes were predictable, corny, cheesy, dated, poorly thought-out and just plain embarrassing.
Although this episode was not as good as "Lisa'a Date with Destiny," the large amount of gags made it quite worthwhile.
This was made even funnier by the fact that, in the X-Files episode that aired half an hour later, (El Mundo Gira, 4X11) Mulder and Scully investigate strange doings in an illegal immigrants' migrant camp, in which they are surrounded by people who are in the country illegally, a fact they more or less ignore.

On Cosmic Era February 11, 70, the Earth Alliance and ZAFT were already at war, although no major actions had taken place.

But the whole Cosmic Wars thing was awful, the parody in the beginning isn't really funny and the plot just drops off halfway through the episode.
The trip to Cosmic Wars Ranch was a little pointless and the resolution was unrealistic, yes, but it was funny enough (not great, but there were a couple of good gags here and there).
An OK episode, but I didn't like the transition from Cosmic Wars (which was pretty funny) to the alcoholism (which was funny for the first few minutes, but very forgettable with the exception of Otto's "Homerhol" line for the rest).
