Cosmicomics is a collaboration of sound and image that equally blend all aspects of music and the moving image.
Cosmicomics, based on four stories from Italo Calvino's novel, scored for narrator, ensemble, multiple projection, and electronic sounds.
We chose four chapters of the Calvino text, Cosmicomics, because their illustrative style and abstract content they were particularly suited to our endeavor.

 Italo Calvino's Cosmicomics | MetaFilter
That’s not really all that Cosmicomics is about, it’s just part of the pretext, from which Calvino can propel a narrative that stretches from (before) the beginning of time to the present.
Cosmicomics is no more concerned with the actual minutae of Terra and Luna than Invisible Cities can be said to accurately describe the history, geography, and technological development of the Yuan Dynasty.
To me Cosmicomics is one of the least engaging of Calvino's works - I've started it a couple of times but have yet to finish it.

Irreal (Re)views 1: Defining Irrealism: Scientific Development and Allegorical Possibility by Dean Swinford
Irrealism is an attempt to understand narratives which may be regarded as the cryptozoological aberrations of postmodern literature, the very Darwinian mutations which, despite their internal logic, exist at the fringes of well defined artistic and literary movements.
All of the characters in Cosmicomics are specimens of the group called Qfwfq, despite the fact that none of these specimens, or narratives, for that matter, physically resemble one another.
Cosmicomics allows for variations in perception which transcend perceptual boundaries in all directions, and features narratives which stretch across billions of years of the Earth’s development.

Italo Calvino: Cosmicomics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Cosmicomics is a phantasmagoria on Creation, an enchantingly ingenious idea which translates theories about the evolution of the Universe into stories and makes "characters" out of mathematical formulas and simple cellular structures.
The narrator, Qfwfq, spends his childhood in the soundless, timeless void; among the incandescent colors of stellar explosions, he plays with hydrogen atoms like marbles and, sitting astride a galaxy, chases his friend Pfwfp around the firmament.
But more than this: the infinities of time and space contract, becoming momentarily acceptable to the finite mind, and the reader glimpses his own infinitesimal significance as part of the complex vastness of the cosmos.

Nothing is ever straight forward in the literary world of Italo Calvino and Cosmicomics is no exception.
This collection of surreal imaginings, each one launching off from a pithy scientific statement, anthropomorphise the raw matter of primaeval galaxies into family units, demigods of primitive matter wile away millennia playing marbles with hydrogen atoms, the moon is explored from a boat via a ladder, and a curmudgeon coelacanth seduces his nephew's fiancé.
Calvino is an excellent writer, but he gave himself too much leeway with this one -- it's got nothing to hold it together, no weight or sense of drama.

 CONTEXT: Barth, Calvino, Borges
I was teaching then at the State University of New York at Buffalo and had fallen much under the spell of Jorge Luis Borges, whom I had discovered just a couple of years earlier.
Even his later extended works, like Cosmicomics, Invisible Cities, The Castle of Crossed Destinies, and If on a winter's night a traveler, are (to use Calvino's own adjectives) modular and combinatory, built up from smaller, quicker units.
And in his later life, like the doomed but temporarily reprieved Jaromir Hladik in "The Secret Miracle," he was obliged to compose and revise from memory.
