Moviecrazed: THE ENDURING PASSION OF COSTA-GAVRAS
Calling "Z" a good thriller is like calling "Easy Rider" a pleasant travelogue According to Costa-Gavras, at any rate.
Gavras insists that he does not want to be labeled a director of thrillers or political films.
Gavras is the earnest, Greek-born director of "Z," the hit French movie about political corruption in Greece that currently has New Yorkers standing on foot-freezing line at the Beekman Theater.

Prisoners Of Conscience : Akbar Ganji A Hero Similar To Yves Montand Portrayal In Costa Gavras' Film « The Confession »
Costa Gavras' film is an essential movie to see or rediscover for it remains one of the most powerful films in the political thriller's genre and alas is a reminder of the sad predicament of prisoners of conscience such as Akbar Ganji and all those who are dying in the name of Freedom.
What is interesting in Costa Gavras' movie is that it transcends the political regime it denounces by becoming a pamphlet against all totalitarian regimes.
Watching Ganji's photos in his cell published on various Iranian websites, I was struck by the similarities of Ganji's situation and that of the hero of Costa Gavras' powerful film The Confession aka L'Aveu starring French actor Yves Montand.

There may be little indication of a revolutionary solution in Costa Gavras' films, but their uncompromising anger and rage at a system that will go to any lengths to defend itself was groundbreaking, and they remain inspiring viewing.

Although the European setting is never specifically identified, the Greek music and the fact that director Costa Gavras immigrated to France from his native Greece, clue us sufficiently that Z takes place in the cradle of democracy.

 AMCTV.com SHOW - Amen.
Costa-Gavras, director of politically charged dramas such as Z (1969) and Missing (1982), presents one of his most controversial works with this historically based account of the Catholic Church's role during the Nazi Holocaust.
The story, which Gavras co-wrote, focuses on Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur), a true-life SS officer who fights to destroy the Zyklon B death gas he once helped create, and a young Jesuit (Mathieu Kassovitz of Amelie) who wants to use Gerstein's experiences to urge Pope Pius XII to condemn Nazi actions.
As with many of his previous films, Gavras has a strong opinion, and with this important thriller he presents his view that the Church--and others--did too little to stop the mass killings.

The film stars Ulrich Tukur and Matthieu Kassovitz because Costa-Gavras didn't want the usual British or American actors playing good guys, with German actors playing the bad guys.
But that decision was only reached after long discussions with producers Claude Beri and Michelle Ray Gavras.
Almost reluctantly, he admitted he had to use special effects to attain a particular sequence where a train goes under a bridge, as a car crosses over it — a beautiful shot to watch but incredibly difficult to choreograph — and time consuming!
