COSTESTI, Romania (AP) – Mobs of striking coal miners stormed through police lines yesterday, attacked riot troops with clubs and homemade explosives and took dozens of policemen hostage in a determined push to continue their march upon the capital.
At least 40 people were injured and up to 50 police kidnapped in the fierce assault when 7,000 miners overran government roadblocks on a central highway leading to Bucharest.
Troops had piled massive concrete slabs across a narrow bend in the road near Costesti to deter the onslaught.
