The Philippine province of Cotabato, like the rest of southern and western Mindanao, was part of the Maguindanao Sultanate, which established its freedom from Spain by treaty in 1645 under Sultan Mohammed Kudarat.
The Province of Cotabato was formerly much larger; when it was reduced to its present dimensions in 1973 it was named "North Cotabato," and the name survives in popular use.
North of the Philippine Province of South Cotabato is Sultan Kudarat in Region XII, Central Mindanao.

THE Supreme Court has slapped a P5,000 fine against a South Cotabato Regional Trial Court judge for allowing the defense to present two witnesses despite the absence of the fiscal prosecuting the case.
On Aug. 13 and 20, 2004, Judge Roberto Ayco of Branch 26, RTC of South Cotabato allowed the defense in Criminal Case 1771 TB to present evidence consisting of the testimony of two witnesses, even in the absence of state prosecutor Ringcar Pinote who was prosecuting the case.
Pinote was on Aug. 13 and 20, 2004 undergoing medical treatment at the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City.
