The underlying rock, known as Cotswold stone, is a yellow oolitic limestone, and the area is characterised by attractive small towns and villages built of this local stone.
The Cotswold village of Chipping Campden is notable for being the home of the Arts and Crafts movement, founded by William Morris at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.

The Cotswold Canals Trust has pledged to raise £1million of match funding and The Waterways Trust hopes to raise a total of £125,000 from its public appeal over the course of the first phase of restoration work.
Working closely with other partners, including Cotswold Canals Trust and Stroud District Council, and British Waterways, The Waterways Trust is also fundraising for the project from charitable trusts and corporate partners and is hoping to raise a further £210,000 from these sources, plus further funding from landfill operators.
The Waterways Trust was established in March 1999 to promote greater public enjoyment and awareness of the UK's canals and rivers; to develop partnerships to secure funding for the conservation and restoration of waterways; and help to realise the social, educational, environmental and economic potential of living waterways.

THE planning mantra of North Wiltshire District Council to 'conserve the past' has been thrown into doubt after officers backed plans to demonlish an historic building without properly asking members of the public.
Had a further two letters of objection been sent to the district council it would have meant the application being determined by the development control committee instead of a council officer.
Despite its historical and architectural appeal, planning legislation has left the district council powerless to prevent the demolition of the house, which is not protected by being listed.
