The Cotton or Cottonian library was the library compiled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton (1571 - 1631), antiquarian and bibliophile.
Cotton's library was just that: the books, manuscripts, coins and medalions he had collected in his personal estate.
Cotton amassed his collection by gathering up the books and artifacts freed up by the dispersal of the monasteries by Henry VIII.

Library is one of seven libraries across the country to win the prestigious American Library Association's 2004 John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award, announced San Jose State University and the City of San Jose today.
The King Library was recognized for its publicity campaign, which highlighted the groundbreaking partnership between the university and city and led up to the library's grand opening in August 2003.
The King Library is the first library in the nation to be funded, co-managed and co-operated by a major city and university.

Despite his early period of goodwill with James I, during which he was made a baronet, Cotton's politics became anti-royalist in nature and the authorities began to fear the uses of his library, which was confiscated in 1630 and returned only after his death to his heirs.
The Cottonian Library, the richest private collection of manuscripts ever amassed, was eventually donated to the nation by Cotton's grandson and now resides at the British Library.
His library was housed in a 26 foot by 6 foot room filled with bookpresses, each with the bust of a figure from classical antiquity on top.

 Cotton Library
COTTON LIBRARY: One of the most important collections of medieval manuscripts, the Cotton Library was severely damaged by fire in 1731.
Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631) was a Renaissance collector of medieval books, which he assembled in the infamous Cotton Library.
He arranged them on a set of shelves; at the top of each section of shelves was the stone bust or carving of figures from classical antiquity, including twelve Roman Emperors, Faustina, and Cleopatra.

 The British Library Map Collections: Cotton Collection
Cotton's collecting was driven by a blend of patriotism and a passion for antiquity.
They include the earliest known plan of an English town drawn to a consistent scale (of Portsmouth in 1545) [Cotton MS Augustus I.i.81] and the earliest isometric view of a building (of the royal manor house in Hull in 1542) [Cotton MS Augustus I.i.84] as well as pictorial maps and bird's-eye views of towns.
Other examples of Tudor mapping are to be found scattered among the charters and throughout the bound volumes of the Cotton collection, usually with their the letters and texts that originally accompanied them.

One of the most prestigious awards given by the American Library Association (ALA) is the John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Award, honoring outstanding library public relations, which is co-sponsored by the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA), a division of the American Library Association, and the H.W. Wilson Company.
The winning entries are housed in the ALA Library for two years, available during that time to other libraries via interlibrary loan.

One of her early accomplishments was to establish the first UTHSCSA branch library in 1976 at what was then the Robert B. Green Hospital.
Beginning in 1979 she participated actively in planning for the current library building and in 1983 she coordinated the move of the collection and equipment from the old building to the new Briscoe Library.
Over the last 10 years she was responsible for several library design and facilities planning projects, including the impressive Regional Academic Health Center Medical Library that opened in 2002.

John Cotton Dana Library has been a federal depository since 1966 and currently selects and acquires approximately 48.5% of the U.S. government publications issued by the Government Printing Office (GPO), covering a wide range of subjects in a variety of formats, including paper, microfiche, CD-ROM, diskette, and online.
In the Dana Library, these documents are arranged by the SuDocs system, kept in the microfiche cabinets marked as U.S. DOCS Fiche and located near the Gov Doc stacks in the reference area.
These cataloged periodicals are integrated with library's general periodical collection, arranged alphabetically by journal title, and located on the lower level of the library.

 Mary Cotton Public Library
According to Library Director Kim Priest, this type of story-time for the younger children is going well and she wants to encourage all mothers with toddlers to stop in and check it out each month.  There is no registration needed and no cost to the families that participate.
The library will be continuing this activity on a monthly basis and all parents with children 0 to 3 years of age are encouraged to attend.
Mary Cotton Public Library is currently taking names of people who would be interested in attending basic computer classes this summer.  Conducted by the library staff, patrons will learn how to use a mouse, move around in Windows XP, set up an email account and do some basic internet searching.

A genetically altered form of the plant, known as Bt cotton, sports a toxin gene lifted from bacteria.
Smallish farms in that country have reported an increase of eighty percent in their cotton yield since they switched to Bt cotton.

 Resources for the Study of Beowulf
It was once owned by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton, an "antiquary" or collector of Anglo-Saxon Charters and manuscripts, whose library was among three foundation collections brought together by the creation of the British Museum in 1753.
Sir Robert bound Beowulf with four other MSS in a combined codex known as Cotton MS.Vitellius A.xv, the 15th item on the first shelf of the "press" of manuscripts under the bust of Emperor Vitellius in his library.
Other manuscripts in the Cotton Library were also cataloged by their proximity to busts of Roman Emperors, which stood atop a series of bookcases!
