Topic: Couch (band)

  Matador Records | Couch Biography
Couch’s last record ‘Fantasy’ was their first in the US, reissued on Matador a year after its considerable impact in the UK and Germany.
Couch’s untitled 1995 vinyl-only debut and its successor ‘Etwas Benutzen’ (1997) threw Couch straight into the center of a musical awakening happening between Weilheim, Munich and Berlin.
Couch is not about replaying electronic music or replacing the song.

 Couch - Profane (Matador)
Couch is kind of like the caboose in that train of bands, the last one to make the trip over, standing out a bit from the rest due to its different purpose and form.
All these bands are sort of electronic, sort of pop, and sort of experimental, but Couch fits in much more cleanly with the type of bands already playing in the United States, post-rock rock bands.
They are still "the" rock band of the group, and they still create a groove that makes you feel like you're coasting through a vacuum--the groove has such forward momentum that you feel it could keep you coasting for all eternity with nothing to slow you down.

Firstly you must understand the cosmic importance of the band experience to your child and by extension the importance of band parenting.
Band members must listen to directions and keep their minds focused just to survive.
Your band member could have the finest instrument, the most expensive lessons, go to the best summer band camps and still never have any chance of winning at competition if the rest of the band is neglected.

 Couch - Fantasy (Matador)
As it turns out, Couch fits in well with all the other Kitty-Yo imports, having many of the same great qualities all the other bands have while still staking claim to their own little niché in the German aural landscape.
The band is entirely instrumental and uses a lineup much similar to Analogue or Tristeza with a four-piece of guitar, bass (by Michael Heilrath, also of Tied and Tickled Trio), drums, and keyboards.
Seeing as Couch's a value is 0.90 and To Rococo Rot's is 0.82, it is certain that Couch is a rad band, but it is a toss up between them and To Rococo Rot as to who is actually the most rad of these German Neu-wavers.

Couch’s 4th album (2nd for us), ‘Profane’ has been out a couple of months, and if you consider yourself any sort of a well-informed, smart person with good taste-in-daring-sounds, you’ve either already bought the album, stolen it or made a copy of it.
Also, the music of Couch was recently selected to serve as the instrumental backing for an advertisement touting the virtues of the Fleet Banking empire.
Couch are working on new recordings for release in 2001.

Eight dollars later and it’s confirmed: the band has returned not with a roar (it is German instrumental rock, after all) but rather a proficient, unoffending and completely unremarkable bid at respectability.
The band has thankfully returned to the familiar embrace of Fantasy’s melody, but not to the distinguishing contrast of its ferocious heights and cold detachedness.
