The Council Grove Reservoir and City Lake located just north of town provide a variety of recreation from fishing and hunting, camping and picnicking to boating and sightseeing.  Covering 3,310 acres, the Council Grove Reservoir is known for its' Crappie fishing, a marina and eight developed camping facilities.
The community of Council Grove has approximately 2,300 people and the entire county of Morris has a population of 6,000.
The reservoirs' 500 acre sister lake, the Council Grove City Lake, is located south west of the reservoir.  There visitors will find Bass, Walleye, Catfish and Crappie fishing as well as public boat ramps, a beach and picnic areas.  It also has several lake cabins and homes.

Council Grove, the county seat of Morris county and one of the historic towns of Kansas, is pleasantly situated in the eastern part of the county, on the Neosho river at an altitude of 1,234 feet, and at the junction of the Missouri Pacific and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroads.
The first settler at Council Grove was Seth M. Hays, who established a trading post there in 1847, in a log cabin a few rods west of the Neosho river on the north side of the old Santa Fe trail.
The place where Council Grove now stands was mentioned by travelers as early as 1820, and in 1825 the treaty was here negotiated with the Osage Indians for the right of way for the government road known as the Santa Fe trail, a portion of which now forms the main street of the city.

The town's southern roots was probably a major factor in Council Grove escaping an attack by the infamous "Border Ruffian" Dick Yeager when he and his men rode through during the Civil War.
