News from Agape Press   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Council spokesman Nate Mouttet says students are looking for what he calls "a spiritual and academic greenhouse" that embraces their faith and offers it a place to grow.
The CCCU spokesman says Christian students want to be in schools that encourage them along their path toward spiritual maturity and that allow them to look at life from a large perspective, an objective that can take many different forms for different students.
Mouttet notes that in order to become a member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, schools must be intentional about making the connection between faith and learning, and they must have hiring practices that require their faculty and staff to be Christians.

Christian colleges have long been stereotyped as Bible schools, where issues such as homosexuality and racism are skirted and student health clinics refuse to distribute birth control.
During the 1990s, enrollment for the 104 evangelical schools that are part of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU) based in Washington D.C., went up 47 percent, compared to the 17 percent and 4 percent of private and public colleges and universities, respectively.
Despite these issues, Christian colleges are an increasingly popular choice for students and their parents who want a school with a “mission,” “something wholesome, with role models,” according to Shirley Mullen, provost at Westmont College.

 Christian Colleges Are Booming
Christian colleges nationwide are booming, as young men and women and their parents who are looking for the best college education possible are no longer assuming that it can be obtained only at secular or state-run universities.
Then, many Christian colleges and universities faced major challenges as they tried to market their schools and programs to Christian parents and their offspring, whose perception was that a superior education was provided only in the secular or state schools.
In years past, some Christian colleges were underfunded, and this lack of financial resources resulted in everything from the inability to hire top-notch faculty to perennial challenges in facilities and programs.
