This Council was called to try to settle a dispute between: 1) the Antiochene supporters of the Chalcedon formula, which emphasized the two natures (divine and human) of Christ and 2) the Monophysite Alexandrians with Cyril's formula, which stressed the oneness of Christ out of his two natures (the "hypostatic" union).
