In 1738 the New Paltz townsmen elected a council of ‘‘Twelve Men,’’ who held the responsibility for surveying and subdividing the land within the patent, and for defending its boundaries in the local courts.
The Twelve Men, often referred to as the ‘‘Duzine’’ in local histories, managed the patent until the early 19th century, when the responsibility fell to the town government after the town’s official incorporation into the state of New York.
