  Hainaut - LoveToKnow 1911
Modern Hainaut is famous as containing the chief coal and iron mines of Belgium.
The principal towns of Hainaut are Mons, the capital, Charleroi, Tournai, Jumet and La Louviere.
Finally, early in the 15th century, the countess Jacqueline was dispossessed by Philip the Good of Burgundy, and Hainaut henceforward shared the fate of the rest of the Netherlands.

Count of Hainaut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The county of Hainaut, located in the west of the German Empire, near to the borders with the Kingdom of France, emerged from the refeudalisation of three counties in 1071: the county of Mons, the southern county of the (medieval) province of Brabant and the Ottonian margraviate of Valenciennes.
The unification of the county of Hainaut as empirial fief was accomplished in 1071, when countess Richilde of Hainaut tried to sell her fiefs to German King Henry IV after she was defeated in the Battle of Kassel.
With the murder of Jacqueline of Hainaut and Holland in 1436, her estates were acquired by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy.

Belgium Guide - Province of Hainaut : Enghien
She brought it to the Bourbon family through her marriage to Francis of Bourbon, Count of Vendôme, the great-grand-father of King Henry IV of France (1553-1610).
Mary also brought the town of Condé-sur-l'Escaut (near Valenciennes, in the French Hainaut), which would be raised to the status of principality in 1546, with her grandson, Louis I of Bourbon-Condé (1530-1569), as first Prince of Condé.
The illustrious House of Bourbon-Condé, extinguished with Louis Antoine de Bourbon-Condé (1772-1804), tenth Duke of Enghien, thus held its ducal and princely titles from towns in the County of Hainaut.

 Geraardsbergen
Count Baldwin VI (Boudewijn VI) of Flanders (also count of Hainaut), established this fortified city, probably in 1067-70, as a precautionary measure against invasions from his neighbours, the German emperor through his vassal in the Duchy of Brabant, or any future Count of Hainaut.
To get the city populated, Count Baldwin VI bestowed several rights to Geraardsbergen through a "stadskeure" (city statute), among which guaranteed freedom for its citizens (in opposition to the villeins living on feudal domains).
By the end of the 11th century, the Count of Flanders, supported by the Lord of Boelare, succeeded into transferring the Abbey of Dikkelvenne to the City of Geraardsbergen.
