The Count is appointed by the king (from 802), the appointment settles on the heirs of a strong count (Sunifred) and the appointment becomes a formality, until the position is declared hereditary (897) and then the County declares itself independent (by Borrell II in 985).
Marche was bounded on the north by Berry, on the east by Bourbonnais and Auvergne; on the south by Limousin itself and on the west by Poitou.
Marche were repeated on a miniature level, fringing many of the small territorial states of pre-Risorgimento Italy with a ring of smaller dependencies on their borders, which represent territorial marche on a small scale.

To secure his position in La Marche, the widowed Hugh arranged a betrothal with the daughter of his next rival of Angoulême, no more than a child, whom John however himself married in August 1200, and deprived Hugh of La Marche and his brother of Eu in Normandy.

It owes its name to its position, it having been in the 10th century a march or border district between the duchy of Aquitaine and the domains of the Frankish kings in central France.
In the 12th century it passed to the counts of Limousin, and this house retained it until the death of the childless Count Hugh in 1303, when it was seized by the French king, Philip IV.
It was divided into Haute Marche and Basse Marche, the estates of the former being in existence until the 17th century.

A Danish march, which gave the name of Denmark; a Saxon marche (both to protect the north of Germany); a Sorb march (Elbe region), an Avar marche (around the Danube),; a Friulian march in Italy; a Gascon march and a Breton march (north of Nantes).
Some of these marches became powerful feudal states (for instance Flanders and the County of Toulouse) when the Carolingian rule collapsed, most probably because they were located quite far from the central power (or at least its remains).

Largely from the pen of Ademar of Chabannes we learn of the efforts of the counts of Poitou, now dukes of Aquitaine, to advance their domains south into Saintonge, Angoulême, the Limousin, and finally Gascony, first in alliance with the Capetians and then with the assistance of the House of Anjou.
Similarly, examination of the legacies left by Count Roger the Old of Carcassonne reveals that many of the castles in his domains were allods -- allods which were often divided in a rather complex way among various members of the family.
In the Spanish March, as elsewhere in the Midi, the castle which was owned outright as an allod by an individual magnate or by important families was still to be found down to 1050.
