	OFF THE TELLY: Reviews/2003/Countdown
		From the marvellous twin highs of its 18th birthday and 3000th episode in 2000, it promptly tumbled violently out of favour so as to suffer a pointless expansion to 45 minutes in 2001, and then, two months ago, having its start time ungraciously kicked back an hour to 3.15pm.
		Like last year, the actual date of the anniversary - 2nd November - fell on a day when the show wasn't on air, so the revelry was spread in typically eccentric fashion over two separate programmes either side of the weekend.
		Their careful demeanour, the loyal support of the studio audience, and the unabashed collective revelling in individual displays of erudition were all factors that shone through regardless; factors that have, of course, endured pretty much unchanged for the entire 21 years.

		Recent highlights included Countdown's 18th birthday in 2000, and the 3000th episode the following year which had been accompanied by a documentary memorable for managing to be both entertaining and still feature contributions from Paul Ross and Arthur Smith.
		Trouble is, there's been something not quite right with Countdown ever since the show switched from a 30-minute format to three quarters of an hour in September 2001.
		Countdown exists in a vastly changed landscape to that it cosily inhabited as little as five years ago.

		Countdown is a UK TV words and numbers game, based on the French original, "Des Chiffres et Des Lettres", and was the first programme broadcast on Channel 4, on November 2nd, 1982.
		All the scores for the last series of Countdown are on the Series 53 Page, while full round-by-round details of the grand final can be found here.
		The Countdown Page is run by Series 48 contestant Mike Brown and has no official affiliation to either Channel 4 or Yorkshire Television, who remain the copyright owners and producers of Countdown.

		This week, Game of the Week goes back to 1990 and the special Countdown that was made to celebrate one thousand editions of the programme.
		It featured two fantastic players from the Countdown alumni - Allan Saldanha, who won eight straight games in Series 15, but narrowly lost out to Dick Green in the final, and Tim Morrissey, who won eight preliminary matches and also drew one in Series 17, but lost out in the semi-finals to Evan Simpson.

		In searching for a solution, all possible arithmetic combinations of the numbers are tried until an exact match or the closest possible attempt is found.
		In "extended mode", you can enter upto twenty arbitrary numbers instead of the six required in Countdown, and see all possible solutions.
