A tour supporting this album would be the last time any version of Steely Dan appeared live until decades later.
Something of a compromise between the tight pop of the band's 1972 debut Can’t Buy a Thrill and the extended instrumental explorations of 1973’s Countdown to Ecstasy, Pretzel Logic included some of the most sophisticated pop music ever committed to vinyl and was unlike anything else on the radio in 1974.
One of the standout tracks, "Parker's Band," was a tribute to legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker.

Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were wiseass New York musician nerds stranded in L.A. in the early Seventies, and they poured all the cynicism and paranoia of that circumstance into Steely Dan, the most notorious studio band in the annals of classic rock.
Their second album, Countdown to Ecstasy, was the only record by the reclusive duo written for an actual live band, and you can tell -- especially on hoo-ha!
Like good stretches of the Stones' Exile on Main Street, this is a record where Steely Dan let slip their extraordinary mask of sarcasm, and could not disguise the joy in these excellent songs, or the fact that they were having a blast playing them.

Countdown To Ecstasy by Steely Dan CD
COUNTDOWN TO ECSTACY is more ambitious, complex, and layered than its predecessor, with a heavier dose of jazz fusion, more subtle and textured arrangements, and an even higher level of studio craftsmanship.
Both "Razor Boy" and "Your Gold Teeth" demonstrate flashes of Latin flavor-- marimba-driven bop in the former, and salsa-cum-lounge jazz in the latter.
It was clear in 1973 that Steely Dan was going to pave the way for modern rock and set the standard for their own progression and for the progression of rock in general.

With Walter Becker down to composer credits and very occasional bass, Donald Fagen progresses toward the intellectual cocktail rock he's sought for almost a decade--followed, of course, by a cadre of top-drawer El Lay studio hacks, the only musicians in the world smart enough to play his shit.
With words that always mean everything they want to say and aural pleasures that signify, these songs are among Fagen's finest, and if their circa-1960 vantage returns us to the student memories of Countdown to Ecstasy and Pretzel Logic, their tenderness is never nostalgic and their satire never sophomoric.
Fagen's acutely shaded lyrics puts the jazziest music he's ever committed to vinyl into a context that like everything here is loving but very clear-eyed, leaving no doubt that this is a man who knows the limits of cool swing and doesn't believe the world was a decisively better place before John Kennedy died.

Founded by Donald Fagen (keyboards and vocals) and Walter Becker (bass and vocals), Steely Dan enjoyed great pop success, culminating in the jazz-oriented, Aja (1977).
The band's first two albums, Can't Buy a Thrill (1972) and Countdown to Ecstasy (1973), remain classics, with innovative songwriting and adventurous arrangements.
In addition to Becker and Fagen (who had been transplanted from New York), the recording sessions for Can't Buy a Thrill included guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, guitarist Denny Dias, and the late Jim Hodder on drums, with singer David Palmer joining toward the end.
