  The Counter Tenor
I have had the experience of playing a recording of a counter tenor and having the person immediately say, "that is a counter!" Often this is spoken in not such a flattering fashion because the underlying subtext is that the sound is ugly or unattractive.
True, some counter tenors have not found their beauty of tone and the sound is not quite what I would call complete or a finished or a marketable product.
He was exactly correct and the counter tenor is facing a huge trap in the vocal arena because there is often a fear of not being heard or that the voice is too small.

The Music Show - 01/03/2003: Andreas Scholl
I think that’s something we will discover in the near future, the counter tenor itself, because the voice itself was so exotic in the beginning, so you were a counter tenor, but if you apply for a position in an opera house, they say I am a soprano.
Andreas Scholl: Counter tenors that have recorded lieder and have recorded later repertoire…well, so far I haven’t done that, but I teach in Basle, a small class there, I have four students, and one of them is a baritone, and I do lots of Schubert songs with him, Winterreise.
It’s not the repertoire that people would expect to be sung by a counter tenor but so far we don’t have the style police that will fine me for saying that in concert; it’s up to the audience to come or not come if I should ever decide to do that in a concert.

The reason for this is that the harmonies sound the tightest and blend the best when the bass, barry and tenor are together with the solo on top.
Every once in a while, the bass or the tenor will have a solo, or parts of a solo, but when they do, the background isn't as strong.
When the tenor solos, the group loses the high end, forcing the group to lose the shimmer that the tenor creates.

Telegraph | Arts | Voice of the counter revolution
By the Sixties, however, the counter-tenor was being taken seriously as an expressive instrument - Britten, for one, wrote some marvellous new music for it, and singers such as James Bowman began to cultivate a richer, fuller timbre that proved that it could convey more than just a frisson of other-worldliness or olde-worlde melancholy.
There were also abstruse physiological arguments about whether a counter-tenor was simply a tenor singing higher than normal or whether he was essentially a fake soprano, employing a falsetto (however that term might be defined).
With encouragement from his teacher, the tenor George Shirley, he began to cultivate the facility, and in 1994 made his professional debut as a fully-fledged counter-tenor.

 Musicpro's Countertenor Web-Page
The difference between a high tenor and a countertenor is that a countertenor's central voice is that of either an alto or a soprano and the high tenor's central voice is that of either a tenor 1 or a tenor 2.
High tenors and Type 1 countertenors don't have to use falsetto in order to sing in the alto or soprano range, while Type 2 countertenors have to use falsetto in order to sing in that range.
A tenor 2 is harassed sometimes, a tenor 1 is harassed more often, a high-tenor is harassed a lot, and a countertenor is harassed most of the time.

Like the contralto, who by muscular adjustments within the larynx can sing the low sounds in her bottom register, the counter tenor can produce an extra high, slightly hooty tone that is described as falsetto.
In earlier times, the high head tones of an ordinary tenor voice came to be miscalled "falsetto," but these are not produced in the same way leaving the term inaccurate and misleading.
The counter tenor had reinforced and strengthened his falsetto register to such an extent that he sings in this register all the time.

The idea of a tenor Sailor is substantiated in the Academy Manuscripts where the role is printed in the tenor clef, and the suggestion that this is a male role is again backed up by the 1700 production, an engraving of which shows John Wiltshire (who also played the Sorceress) playing the Sailor.
The problem with the use of the tenor voice is that the Sailor's range of c'-g'', translated down an octave, is slightly lower than Purcell's usual tenor range.
The role of Aeneas was assigned in the twentieth century both to tenors and baritones, and since it is a 'heroic' role, and appears in all the manuscripts in tenor clef, it is unlikely that it was originally intended as a 'breeches' role.

Ian Bostridge again proves why he's arguably today's numero uno tenor in non-operatic song repertoire (not to take anything away from his notable presence on the opera stage), delivering incisive interpretations of exquisite versatility, lyricism, dynamic force, and irresistible emotional power.
Since they were written over a period of 30 years, listeners also will find the Canticles fascinating for their innumerable stylistic and thematic references to other Britten compositions, from the famous Serenade for tenor, horn, and strings, to operas such as Billy Budd or the cantata Rejoice in the Lamb.
The disc is filled out with seven of Britten's delightfully inventive folksong arrangements, with Maltman singing The Plough Boy, The Salley Gardens, and The foggy, foggy dew, Daniels taking There's none to soothe and O Waly, Waly, and Bostridge finishing with The Ash Grove and Greensleeves.
