Topic: Counterparts album

In the News (Fri 1 Jun 12)

  Channel4.com - SlashMusic - Counterparts
During its recording, guitarist Alex Lifeson wanted the album to be more hard rock-oriented, while bassist Geddy Lee was content with their recent excursions in melodic pop.
Lifeson must have won the battle, because COUNTERPARTS is a harder-rocking affair than Rush's previous several albums.
COUNTERPARTS contains at least one track that deals with a topical issue (as in 1989's anti-suicide "The Pass", etc.)--"Nobody's Hero" is Rush's analysis of the AIDS situation.

Lyrically, the album also continues the evolution of previous records-- Neil Peart's early albums were fantasy/science fiction influenced, often allegorical or parable.
The past few Rush albums began to show a trend of lyrics with a much more personal bent, this album continues that trend-- themes largely of love and relationship dominate the album, and even the more globally minded songs ("Nobody's Hero") have a personal slant to the lyrics.
Counterparts is one of Rush's best albums, almost up there with the stuff from their classic period.

Even though the album shares the same thin sound (though not quite as bad) as Presto, it more than makes up for it with 8 terrific songs, though the other 2 songs are really weak and hurt the album a little bit.
Geddy's bass work is stellar (though I dislike the sound he was still using on this album), and I loved the single bar of 5/4 they threw in after the 2nd "chorus" section just to throw people off who might try to dance to this song.
It might have been due to the fact that it was the first album they had tried to start stripping the walls-of-keyboards that had clogged their mid-80's material and they hadn't quite gotten used to a more organic sound yet.

THE MACK : SOUTH: FROM HERE ON IN
The album opens ominously with "Broken Head I," a dramatic and driving instrumental track that sounds like the perfect backdrop for an upcoming Star Wars light-saber battle; the track is all thunderous drums, teeth-jarring bass and maniacal keyboard loops.
The rest of the album, for better or worse, comes across as rather tame compared to the three break-beat instrumentals that pop up at the beginning, middle and end.
Judging by the album's promising bright spots, and with strong connections to an innovator like Lavelle, the safe bet is that South's future is looking, well, north.

The choirs are the key to that album, that and the majestically written classical arrangements, halfway between Rhapsody and Blind Guardian.
The songs on this album are simply beautiful with their majestically orchestrated symphonies and large use of choirs.

In general, when the Quad album is played in normal stereo, it has excellent stereo separation, wider than the regular album release (with one notable exception).
On the intro, the Quad one has the guitar and maracas on the left, while on the regular album, the guitar is on the left and the maracas are centered.
Finally, on the last verse, the Quad album has some quiet guitar playing before "Baby, if I had the answers" and also under the line "Plainly it's a circle" which is missing on the regular album.

The quality is top-notch from the opening introduction to the final notes of "Outside the Wall." The album transports you into the very front rows of the concert, there before the lights and the madness of the live show itself.
A few songs are almost exact copies of their album counterparts, but for the most part every track is in some way or another better than the original.

If you've never heard an entire album by Rush, then start with this one: it's their eighteenth, and one of the best they've released in 12 years.
Like their past two albums, Rush tries to go back to the power trio format with few synthesizers.

Costello takes full responsibility, saying that his approach to the album was confused, and by the time he realized what had gone wrong it was too late to do anything about it.
It is important to point out that Costello's 'worst album' is by no means an embarrassment-- in fact, it is a very enjoyable record that was unfortunate enough to have been preceeded and followed by a string of much better ones.

But despite its "lost album" status, there is nothing revelatory here; the band ties on several alt-rock hats, from Americana ("I Behaved That Way") to guitar-heavy indie pop ("Comeback") without sounding convincing in any of them.

Thematically, "Counterparts" speaks to the relationships between man and woman (in case the nut-and-bolt illustration wasn't obvious enough), the role that sex plays in life and death, searching for a balance between masculine and feminine, and an instrumental ("Leave That Thing Alone!") that might be better left to the imagination.
— Probably their best nineties album and showing a much more 'slimline' Rush.Although there's none of the pomp of earlier days, the band's playing is still as strong as ever while the songs provide a compelling soundtrack to the world we live in.'Animate' is my favourite here but there are no bad songs.
"Counterparts" encouraged me to buy most of their previous albums, and revealed the beauty of Rush to me. The sad thing is that later album "Test For Echo" was a huge disappointment, and both "Vapor Trails" and "Feedback" are disastrous.

all they have is track number, so for albums with multiple cds its a bit useless having two track 1's from the same album - plus, just changing the album name to "x: disc 1" gets annoying when you have loads of songs.
In these album subnodes the songs with albumartist same as artist are shown.
This just wouldn't be there for albums that were only a single disc (an thus left the field blank).

The amazing response was not only band loyalty but also based on the fact that if you were one of the first 500 who bought the album, that you would get a wristband which allowed you to get the CD signed by the band who would be returning to the store after their free show.
The album has been nearly three years in the making and is the follow up to their debut album "A handful of earth", released in 2004.
It’s an album that has been very well-received by the fans and media alike, yet while many reviews have called it “a return to greatness” for the band - they have honestly not returned to any old or classic style and instead continue their climb upward into the annals of Rock music history.

 Guitar Lesson Articles - Rush
More than 20 years and 19 albums into their career, Rush continue to defy easy classification.
On their latest album, Counterparts, Alex Lifeson, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart have come full circle, returning to the sort of heavy, guitar-oriented riffs that marked their Seventies sound.
Presto (1989) and Roll The Bones (1991) saw the trio moving back to a more guitar-dominated sound as in their early years, with standout songs like "Show Don't Tell." This trend continues with Counterparts, which combines their compositional finesse with grungey-sounding guitars and groove-oriented rhythms.

It was the long awaited return for many fans to a more guitar based sound, shying away from the more pop keyboard oriented sound that we all know and love.
