		Yancey County was established in 1833 from Buncombe and Burke Counties.
		The county seat, Burnsville, was named for Captain Otway BURNS, who was serving in the NC legislature and at the cost of his political career, cast the tie breaking vote to permit new western counties to be formed and the establishment of Yancey County.
		The population of Yancey County in 1990 was approximately 19,000 and includes the town of Burnsville.

		County officials have launched a program that will recognize restaurants that are committed to providing healthier dining options by eliminating the use of artificial trans fats.
		Participants in the program agree not to store, distribute, serve or use in the preparation of any menu item partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, shortening, or margarines with 0.5 grams or more trans fat per serving.
		The County will issue a window decal to participating restaurants.
