 History of the Railways
Following partition in 1921, and before the nationalisation of the railways and road operators in 1948, railway services in Northern Ireland (excluding narrow gauge) were provided by three private railway companies, the Belfast and County Down Railway, the Great Northern Railway (Ireland) and the London Midland and Scottish Railway (Northern Counties Committee).
The Downpatrick and County Down Railway (DCDR) was set up in 1985 with the aim of restoring a portion of the former Belfast and County Down Railway as a working railway museum, incorporating the various aspects of Northern Ireland's railway heritage.
The line was built by the Belfast Central Railway with the intention of connecting the BCDR, the GNR(I) and the London Midland and Scottish (Northern Counties Committee), which was then the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway before being bought over by the Midland Railway (which later became the LMS).
