 Victoria County
Victoria County comprises 887 square miles of nearly level to gently rolling coastal prairie, surfaced primarily with dark clay loams and clays that support bluestems and tall grasses, oak forest, huisache, mesquite, prickly pear, and other vegetation.
Victoria County served as a transportation, military, and supply center during the war, since its major town was on a branch of the Cotton Road, which provided access to guns, ammunition, medicine, and supplies from Mexico in exchange for crops.
The Victoria Barge Canal was the outgrowth of the original Intracoastal Canal Association established locally in 1905; Congress did not authorize the construction of a barge canal, except for the dredging of the Guadalupe River, until 1945.

The transcription presented here is an exact copy of the returns from that census for Victoria County, today's Victoria and Madawaska Counties, as preserved in the microfilm copy of the original held in the National Archives of Canada (microfilm reel number C-996).
Victoria County was in 1851 divided into six parishes, four of which (Madawaska, St.Basile, St.Francis and St.Leonard) make up present-day Madawaska County.
The area covered in the Parish of Perth is described thusly: "The Parish of Perth, County Victoria, on the East Side of the River St.John, Extent 30 miles settled 16 miles up the Tobique River." The area covered includes today's Arthurette.
