Counting natives and newcomers provides a look at the cultural disconnect and a chance to see whether it's growing or is about the same proportionally as in other periods.
For instance, they didn't count trailers as houses, but they certainly were to me. Though the cards had check marks for structures such as dwellings, I read each card to figure out if something was a house by my definition, looking at attributes such as plumbing, forms of heating, and wiring.
It is inevitable that at times I threw houses or people into the wrong column through ignorance or carelessness, but on the whole I think the figures are a fairly correct count of houses and people in Boothbay at different times in the twentieth century.

Time was when house price indices were few and far between, but these days hardly a week goes by without some oracle pronouncing gravely on the course of the market and the future prospects of bricks and mortar.
Instead of basing their figures on simple averages they work out their house price indices by tracking the fortunes of a composite 'average' house, a kind of statistical fiction, but one, they argue, that comes closer to the reality of what's happening in the market.
The formula for the 'average' house also uses mortgage approvals rather that completions, making the price index more up to date - and this, the lenders argue, gives a more immediate impression of where the market is now (as opposed to where it's been).

The ANSI standards define “finished area” as “an enclosed area in a house suitable for year-round use, embodying walls, floors, and ceilings that are similar to the rest of the house.” Measurements must be taken to the nearest inch or tenth of a foot, and floor area must be reported to the nearest square foot.
