Country Life - Show of Hands album review at SpiralEarth.co.uk
West country duo of Steve Knightley and Phil Beer released Country Life in 2003 to critical acclaim, along with some uncomfortable fretting about the political strength of the title track, a claws out rant about the plight of rural Britain.
Unfortunately the reality of country life is not Range Rovers and Barbours but "no trains, no jobs, no shops, no pubs" as Steve Knightley sings.
The diversity of musical style, mood and pace on the album is always held in control; as an album it is totally cohesive - nothing unbalances it.

Continuing with the stylistic developments of Stranded, Country Life finds Roxy Music at the peak of their powers, alternating between majestic, unsettling art rock and glamorous, elegant pop/rock.
At their best, Roxy combine these two extremes, like on the exhilarating opener "The Thrill of It All," but Country Life benefits considerably from the ebb and flow of the group's two extremes, since it showcases their deft instrumental execution and their textured, enthralling songwriting.
This album, recorded at Long Beach Auditorium on May 12, 1974, appeared as a limited release in a handful of countries in the mid-1970s, and showed up as a remastered, somewhat improved LP in 1985.

CD Baby: CD Baby: COUNTRY music you will love.
Modern Country isn’t immune to this phenomenon where music is not only more accessible but more disposable and short-lived.
This kind of personal investment is detectable throughout his album, whether it be found in a ballad or an upbeat rocker.
Bringing a rowdy, rebellious and scoundrel-like nature to the medium of traditional bluegrass and country folk, The Benders deliver unrelenting, sometimes frantic, sometimes sharp-edged and mishief-making, whiskey-guzzling music with no qualms about throwing in some rock or blues influence here and there (or whatever they fancy) to light up these songs with crooked hillbilly danger.

Country Life is the second LP of the latter grouping, and it probably is the highpoint of the band's career (although its predecessor, Street Life, is stiff competition).
COUNTRY LIFE is certainly one of the best albums of the 70's and, despite misguided critical observations about SIREN, their best effort.
Musically the album is a fairly varied affair, ranging from hard rock to swirling psychedelia ("Out of the Blue" with Eddie Jobson's flanged violin/keyboards, is classic) to more-or-less straight blues and almost-country stylings.

Featuring a group of session musicians who would later form the Eagles, the album was a softer, more laid-back variation of the country-rock she had been recording.
While the album was a commercial success, it signalled that her patented formula was beginning to run out of steam.
She also returned to her country roots in 1987, recording the Trio album with Dolly Parton and Emmylou Harris.

It turned out the group sounded less like country than early garage punk: this was not their intention.
Destroy All Human Life represents the closest the group has managed to come to the country & western style which had previously served as a discipline more than a medium.
The group never approach country & western with an ironic attitude: it is the medium through which they produce music, in the same way that a blues singer produces music via blues.

The famous bluesman's stellar recordings for Tradition epitomized Lightnin's spare "country blues" which was in contrast to the brash and bold Chicago blues so commercially appealing at the time.
Lightnin's first two albums for Tradition (AUTOBIGRAPHY IN BLUES and COUNTRY BLUES) were just that--down and dirty, out and out blues, honest and true--perfect documents of Lightnin's style, songs and performance.
Country Blues showcases Hopkins in his element, vividly coloring in the standards and originals with emotion, energy, longing, and wiry wit.

country music has covered a lot of territory since jimmie rodgers hopped off the train in the early part of the 20th Century-it's been the soundtrack of the everyman, conveying the complexities of life in sometimes the simplest of ways and of course, detailing lives and loves with gut-wrenching honesty.

The album is fun from start to finish, but after a while all of the songs tend to sound the same.
A welcome respite comes, appropriately in the middle of the album, with a cover of Stealer's Wheel's classic "Stuck in the Middle with You." This is a fun album, but it's easy to get stuck in the middle of it.
The way the EP closes, it becomes clear that there was an emotional trajectory to these four songs, and, like any storytellers worth their salt, Oberst and Daniel found a way to end things happily, but not sappily.

From the idiosyncratic art rock of their self-titled debut to the seductive pop of albums like AVALON, Roxy Music covered a lot of ground, but COUNTRY LIFE, which falls somewhere in between, synthesizes all of their strengths.
Standouts include "Bitter-Sweet", a clear homage to the bombast and fading glory of German cabaret music, and the work of Kurt Weill in particular, and "Casanova", a dense funk track carried along on a complex bass line and a wavering synthesizer.
The album's last track, "Prairie Rose", leads off with a heavily echoed guitar solo, and features some of Andrew Mackay's most expressive saxophone playing.
