Since the Government changed the administrative borders in Yorkshire in 1974, the position of Yorkshire CCC has been that they represent the true, traditional county of Yorkshire, that is, the three ridings and the City and Ainsty of York.
In clinching the match against Glamorgan at Scarborough in 2001 the club won its first County Championship since 1968 under the flinty captaincy of locally born David Byas (who returned in 2005 as director of cricket).
Yorkshire CCC was famous for insisting that its players must have been born within the traditional county of Yorkshire, a rule not dropped until 1992, and Yorkshire's results suffered through the seventies and eighties as other counties raced to sign major overseas stars.

The Secretaries of the major cricket-playing counties met at Lord's on December 16, 1889 to agree the fixtures for the following season.
Prior to 1890, there were 'unofficial' county champions given the title by 'popular' or newspaper acclaim.
Penalty for poor pitches reduced to 8 points, with the provision that this penalty be increased to 12 points if the county has prepared a poor or unfit pitch in the previous 12 months.

If a County Championship game cannot be played due to the green having been deemed unfit for play the game shall be played within seven days, at the same venue, the draw for the matches to stand.
If two County Associations are level at the end of the preliminary matches played, both in aggregate points scored and win points awarded, a deciding match as per rule 2 shall take place within 7 days of the last match being completed.
The County gaining the greatest number of points in each of the four Sections shall then play in a semi-final round, the winner of Section one against the winner of Section two, and the winner of Section three against the winner of Section four.
