Holland is a former county of the Holy Roman Empire, ruled by the Count of Holland, and later the leading member of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands (Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden, 1581–1795).
The greatest cities of the provinces were located within the province of Holland such as Amsterdam (capital of The Netherlands), Rotterdam, Leiden, Alkmaar, the Hague (the seat of government), Delft and Haarlem (capital of Holland).
Holland arose as a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the 9th century.

Holland is a country where the prevalent mode of transportation is the bicycle and the personnel at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol glide from gate to gate on two-wheel scooters.
We watched a shoemaker carve Holland's famous wooden shoes and learned that because so much of the country is wet - Netherlands means lowlands - practical wooden shoes are still worn by farmers and fisherman and that the painted ones were worn to church and the intricately carved ones for weddings.
And since one can't go to Holland and not ride a bike, we took advantage of the infamous Dutch "white bikes" available in the park, that can be picked up and left anywhere whenever the riders are finished with them, and rode through the changing landscape of forests and sand dunes.
