A stream that divides the town in two was formerly the boundary between Perthshire and Angus, the older part of the town being in the Angus portion giving rise to the name Coupar-Angus.

The first plan may have been projected by King David I who intended to found the house on his manor at Coupar Angus, though it was left to his grandson, King Malcolm IV, to carry out his proposal.
After the death of Lord Coupar in 1669 the monastery was used as a source of building materials, and much of the stone was incorporated into the town that grew up around the precinct.
The site is on the south side of the town of Coupar Angus and the remains can be found to the south-east of the church.

An early mention of the surname Blair was an entry in the "Registrorum Abbacie de Aberbrothoc," which recorded Stephen de Blare as a witness to a charter on the lands of Balgillo (near Kettins, Angus) by Dovenald, Abbot of Brechin to the monastery of Arbroath, between 1204-1211.
This Stephen, son of Vallenus, granted to the monks of Coupar a charter of the lands of Lethcassy (now Carsie) in the parish of Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
Ardblair is in the parish of Blairgowrie and borders the lands which Stephen granted to Coupar Angus Abbey.

This name is similar to that of Coupar, Fife; Coupar Angus itself and Cupar-Macnulty, now Couttie near Coupar Angus, all lie at the confluence of rivers or burns.
This initial look at the place-names recorded in the Cartulary of Coupar Angus confirms the strength of influence of the abbey on the farm names in the immediate vicinity, many of which are still in use today.

A meeting was held in Smieton’s Inn on 18th November, 1867 when it was decided to form a Bowling Club in Coupar Angus.
They were met at the foot of Tullybaccart by a party of Scouts and on reaching Baldinnie they were piped into town by a Pipe Band, cheered on by bowling club members and locals.
It is situated at the western edge of the Strathmore Valley, hence the name and located on the A94 Perth to Forfar Road, within the town of Coupar Angus.
