Coupling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunication and electronics, coupling is the desirable or undesirable transfer of energy from one medium, such as a metallic wire or an optical fiber, to another medium, including fortuitous transfer.
The term "coupling" is often used for Angular momentum coupling, the interaction between two nuclei in Nuclear magnetic resonance.
Coupling with reference to living beings refers to mating or to the act of sexual intercourse.

An example of this is the jaw coupling, in which driving jaw faces push the driven jaw faces through an elastomer in compression between them; if the elastomer breaks away, the driving faces simply advance to push the driven faces directly.
Finite-life couplings are those that wear in normal operation, because of using sliding or rubbing parts to transmit torque and compensate for misalignment.
If the coupling fits the application but its standard off-the-shelf model is not rated for the RPM required, determine whether the coupling can be economically changed to bring it up to the necessary speed.

An Inter-Service Coupling Index for Lossless Exchanges
Coupling is a term that is used to describe the breadth and depth of dependencies between two entities.
Although coupling usually occurs as an instance of a collaboration path between systems, it is possible to identify some of the design time problems that invite tight coupling without ever looking at the producer/consumer relationship or at the runtime message instances.
However, the increase in coupling is also related to the ubiquity of the protocol implementations or the ease in which a substitute can be located.

Vertical movement of either coupling will disengage the hook, and in the electro-magnetic system we arrange for one coupling to be pulled downwards by arranging an electro-magnet between the rails (see Fig.8).
Note that the path of coupling 'B' is downwards with a slight horizontal movement and that of coupling 'A' mainly horizontal.
The coupling wire with an unsupported length of some 65mm (2.5in.) is vulnerable when stock is continually having to be packed and unpacked for exhibition work; also, the fact that four wheel vehicles are pulled from the opposite end to the coupling hook has caused some difficulties, particularly on sharp curves and with heavy trains.

 Amplifier coupling
The method of coupling that uses the least number of circuit elements and that is, perhaps, the easiest to understand is direct coupling.
So, when a capacitor is used as a coupling element, the capacitance should be relatively high so that it will couple the entire signal well and not reduce or distort the signal.
Transformer coupling is very often used for the final output (between the final amplifier stage and the output device) because of the impedance-matching qualities of the transformer.

Coupling Selection   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Primary factors that will affect the type and size of coupling used for an application include, but are not limited to: horsepower, torque, speed (RPM), shaft sizes, environment conditions, type of prime mover, load characteristics of the driven equipment, space limitations and maintenance and installation requirements.
Because all couplings have a broad band of speed, torque, and shaft-size capabilities, those criteria are not the best place to start.
Couplings in this category include all designs that use a non-metallic element within the coupling, through which the power is transmitted.

 How loose is your coupling?
In fact, there's so much emphasis on loose coupling that many people jump to two natural, but false conclusions: first, that because loose coupling is so good, then tight coupling must be bad, and second, that there are only two levels of coupling, namely loose and tight.
Coupling is a term that describes the level of common knowledge necessary by a provider and a consumer in a distributed computing exchange.
In a very loosely coupled interaction, there may be no way for the consuming software to understand the contents of that fragment, but a human consumer may be able to recognize the fragment simply by looking at it and figuring out the context of the fragment.

 Understanding Coupling
Coupling is one of those ambiguous terms that gets thrown around frequently, but very few people stop to think about its meaning and its impact on a software system.
Coupling is tossed around almost as much as scalability is. And, as elaborated upon in the Clustering chapter of the Mastering EJB 2.0 book (available for download at www.theserverside.com), scalability is a term that has no foundation in computer science whatsoever!
Loosely coupled and tight coupling are somewhat ambiguous terms because they are designed to indicate a "degree" of coupling that a system has to its dependencies.

 CNN.com - NBC yanking struggling 'Coupling' - Oct. 15, 2003
NBC is taking its highly touted comedy "Coupling" off its schedule for two weeks in what could be an ominous sign about its future.
Last week, "Coupling" was seen by 10.7 million people, ranking No. 37 for the week in Nielsen Media Research's rankings -- not a strong performance on NBC's powerful Thursday schedule.
"Coupling," considered by some critics to be NBC's attempt to find a replacement for "Friends," will air October 23, NBC spokeswoman Rebecca Marks said.

Coupling depicts men's and women's sexuality in the usual way: men are slaves to sex and women use it as a weapon.
The characters talk about sex an awful lot, but in an era when police dramas routinely show naked butts and teen audiences are offered plotlines featuring raunchy sex between a vampire and a slayer, it's nothing that would cause your typical TV watcher to blush.

BBC - Comedy Guide - Coupling
As the years passed so (in the fourth series) Jeff left (he was said to be travelling abroad) to be replaced by the nervy and nerdy Oliver, who works in a fantasy/sci-fi shop called Hellmouth; also, Susan fell pregnant by Steve.
Coupling was a self-consciously modern, Friends-style comedy featuring a group of well-to-do young people who spend their leisure time at trendy wine bars and expensive restaurants.
This opinion was patently not shared by NBC, however, which in June 2002 bought the American adaptation rights with a view to mounting a primetime replacement for, yes, Friends.

 Why TV's 'Coupling' failed | csmonitor.com
A mystery, however, that has baffled the wisest philosophers and executives alike is the failure of "Coupling" as the newest attempt to fill the gaping hole that will appear in NBC's schedule and profit statements as "Friends" comes to a conclusion.
And the producers, stars, and network executives donned ashes and sackcloth, and engaged in a time-honored process of blaming everyone under the sun but themselves, confiding to their loved ones that they had never really thought it was going to work, but everyone else was behind it, and so who were they to say no.
Now, you might say that "Coupling" failed because of the Xerox formula: a copy of a copy of a copy always lacks the freshness, the clarity, the sharpness of the original.

Coupling, NBC's racy new sitcom, described as a sexier, PG-13 version of Friends, hasn't won over fans at two affiliate stations, which have decided to yank the series before it airs.
