  Courage Under Fire
Courage Under Fire does an admirable job of trying to capture the often painful process of soldiers trying to make sense of their experiences upon their return from the war.
Courage Under Fire, like the double meaning of its title, is subtle in ways, but is a powerful depiction of the meaning of courage.

Filmtracks: Courage Under Fire (James Horner)
Courage Under Fire: (James Horner) Coming off of the extraordinary year in which he had composed Braveheart, Apollo 13, and Legends of the Fall, among others, James Horner suffers a sort of lapse during 1996 and 1997 until Titanic would forever change his career.
There is one moment in Courage Under Fire when Horner does something incredibly unique; at the start of track two, he uses the sound effects of helicopter ignition and the gradual increase in blade whooshes that eventually blend into (and yield to) the orchestra.
There are other examples of where elements in Courage Under Fire would eventually end up, but the most important impression to keep in mind about this score is that everything you hear within it would later be produced in a superior form by Horner.

 Review: Courage Under Fire
Courage Under Fire shows us another face of war's horrors, although this particular perspective is less bleak than that of a Platoon or an Apocalypse Now.
Those movies were brutally effective because they reveled in bleakness, cynicism, and carnage; Courage Under Fire gains its power by affirming that the cost of war isn't the inevitable eradication of every trace of human dignity and heroism.
Courage Under Fire ends with a moment of catharsis, but there are no overblown speeches -- only a simple, quiet scene that touches the heart more profoundly than anything accomplished by melodramatic manipulation.
