Battlecruiser   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Battlecruisers were large naval gunships of the early 20th Century, larger than a cruiser and of comparable size to a battleship.
The idea was that the big guns would allow it to take out destroyers and smaller cruisers before the battlecruiser ever got into range of their guns or torpedoes, while their speed would enable them to escape enemy battleships, or to swoop on crippled enemy battleships during a fleet action.
The original battlecruiser concept proved successful at the Battle of the Falkland Islands during World War I when the British battlecruisers HMS Inflexible and HMS Invincible did precisely the job they were intended for when they annihilated a German cruiser squadron commanded by Admiral Maximilian Graf Von Spee in the South Atlantic Ocean.

HMS Courageous (50) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Built as a "large light cruiser" during World War I, Courageous, her sister HMS Glorious, and half-sister HMS Furious, were the brainchildren of Admiral Lord Fisher, and were designed to be "light cruiser destroyers".
The design was for a light battlecruiser; while having 15-inch guns, she was actually classed by the British Navy as a light cruiser because of her light armor protection.
Courageous could be distinguished from her sister Glorious by a shorter round-down on her flight deck at the stern, by a different type of mast, and the addition of a charthouse on the island.

Glorious class aircraft carrier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Glorious and HMS Courageous were originally built as 'large light cruisers', which is a cross between 'a light cruiser with 15-inch guns' and 'a battlecruiser with almost no armor'.
The final legend design for Glorious and Courageous was submitted to the Admiralty for approval on 28 January 1915, and was approved with a few changes on 14 March.
In terms of visual recognitional differences: Courageous had a tripod mast while Glorious had a pole mast; Glorious had a lengthened flight deck at the stern with a more pronounced round-down; Glorious had her quarterdeck 1 deck higher; Courageous had an additional chart house on the island.

Congressional opposition to defence spending dissipates after the failure of the Washington Conference to contain Japanese expansion, and it is believed that Naval Superiority could be achieved by completing the 1916 programme, in tandem with a modernisation programme for existing battleships to extend the range of their main armament, and convert them to oil fuel.
The battleships and battlecruisers of the 1916 programme were followed in the shipyards by a building programme of cruisers to address this key deficiency in the US fleet, and a modernisation programme for a number of existing battleships completed between 1916 and 1923.
