Courante - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Courante is a dance from the Baroque era and of French origin.
It is generally the second (or third, if a prelude is used) movement of the Suite de Danses.
The Italian dance was faster, hopping and running, a courtship dance; however, it is not clear from previous versions of this article whether this is significantly different from the French Renaissance Courante, or whether it is based on a source independent of Arbeau.

StreetSwing's Dance History Archives - Courante Dance Page - Main1
Originally, the Courant came from Italy to France via Catherine de Medici (1518-1589) and was danced in the sixteenth century at the French courts and lasting well into the 1800's.
The Elizabethan Courante was much quicker than the Courante of Louis XIV (1638-1715) and Charles II (1661-1700) reigns.
Sach's states that "the Courante was similar to the Branles and Piva dances".

Courante - Search Results - MSN Encarta
Courante, court dance popular between about 1600 to 1800; its music, in a stylized form, usually was the second movement of the Baroque suite.
During Louis's reign the dances which opened court balls were the branles, no longer simple country dances but refined and ennobled.
From these evolved the Baroque suite, which basically consists of a pair of such paired dances: Allemande (slow), Courante (fast), Sarabande (slow),...

 Courantes
Courantes are another type of early period dance.
Courantes are documented in Arbeau's Orchesography although there are many sources for Courante (or Coranto) music, and a few modern scholars have choreographed their own versions.
Courantes are danced with their own style of steps, being courante steps.

 Bach's Sarabande - Discussion Forums
Allemande, Courante, Sarabande, Gigue and Chaconne are all Baroque (I think) dance forms.
But for "we mere mortals", the Allemande and Courante are still less accessible than the Sarabande and Bouree.
To clarify: The Allemande and Courante of the FIRST Partita (1002) don't sit well on the guitar IMO, but top-drawer players can make it sound OK. The whole of the SECOND Partita (1004) fits quite nicely on the guitar, as does all of the THIRD one (1006/1006a).

 Jacob van Eyck Quarterly 2002 / 2
It became known as 'Courante Mars' although the piece is in duple time and not a courante at all (triple-time versions existed as well).
The 'Tweede [second] Courante Mars' [NVE 57] was probably meant to have the same scheme.
A comparison makes clear that the figurations of the second 'Courante Mars' are always a little more advanced in the process of diminutions in comparison to the corresponding 'breaking notes' of the first set.

Louis COUPERIN - Tombeau de M. de Blancrocher [JW]: Classical CD Reviews- April 2003 MusicWeb(UK)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
There is even greater gravity and weight in the Tombeau de M de Blancrocher, in F major, which Wilson plays with eloquent beauty, with its baleful bass interruptions giving notice of the saturnine and invincible forces ranged against life and an occasional obsessive concentration on its material.
Wilson is fine in the Courante - one of the pieces in G minor — where he galvanizes the rhythm whilst the right hand voicings, full of grandeur and nobility, course through the splendid Passacaille and sounding Handelian avant la lettre.
Stylish gravity is mined in that set’s Courante and the crossed hands Courante that follows, with its rhythmic pitfalls and delicate filigree is negotiated with panache.

 Bach Choir of Bethlehem
Although Bach almost always uses French titles for the individual movements (“Air” being an exception), many of the movements are more Italian in style (David Schulenberg), especially in the courante movements.
A few individual movements appear to be somewhat galant in style; this is a style we associate more with the music of the sons of Bach, and is surprisingly forward-looking for works written in the 1720s.
Notice that all six begin with allemande, courante, and sarabande, and each ends with a gigue.
