Court citation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Court citation is a standard system used in common law countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to uniquely identify the location of past court cases in special series of books called reporters.
Many state courts require that both citations be used when citing cases from any court in that state's system (a practice technically known as "parallel citations").
Public domain citations are those which usually refer to the official reporters and not some kind of publication service such as Westlaw or LexisNexis or some particular legal journal or specialization specific reporter.

Basic Legal Citation: § 2-200   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Since the decisions of American courts generally deal with multiple issues and tend to be lengthy, recounting preligitation facts and procedural events of limited relevance to the points for which they might be cited, it is rarely enough simply to cite the case.
When state cases are cited to a court in the same state parallel addresses should be provided if the case is reported in both an official state reporter and a West regional reporter –; the official reporter address coming first, the regional reporter address second, the two separated by a comma «e.g.».
A citation consisting only of the core items represents that a clear holding of a majority of the court stands for the proposition with which the writer has associated it.  It also represents that there have been no legal proceedings in the case occurring after the cited opinion that affect its authority.

Specialized citations could be devised for each new layer of this electronic record, but the wiser course is to design a set of universal citation standards which can be used to locate law both in books and any subsequent electronic format.
A medium-neutral citation consists of data elements which have intellectual or locational relevance without regard to the physical medium in which a document is fixed.
By this test, the citation 100 Ark. 200, 201 is not medium-neutral, since the data elements representing the volume and page where the case is found have relevance only in a printed medium and have no natural meaning in electronic formats.
