The house was also used on April 10 for the Surrender Commissioners' meeting, and over the next few days as the headquarters of Major General John Gibbon of the U.S. Army.
The house was purchased by John L. Pascoe and apparently rented to the Ragland family formerly of Richmond.
On November 25, 1947, bids for the reconstruction of the McLean House were opened and on April 9, 1949, 84 years after the historic meeting reuniting the country, the McLean House was opened by the National Park Service for the first time to the public.

One of the court house employees also told me to go to the area of the county where my family had lived and to talk to a certain lady.
There are many circuit court records that lend information on Virginia families to the 1700's when land and estates were settled with family members who moved from there to KY. The court records that are lose leaf have been in order by alphabet and years.
What was annoying was a family who arrived at the court house (offices of the Circuit Clerk) just after my husband and I. A young woman, her 10 yr old son, 5 yr old daughter plus both of the grandparents announced they were looking for their "roots" and made a complete nuisance of themselves.

The Battle of Spotsylvania was fought from May 8-19, 1864 along a trench line some four miles long, with the Army of Northern Virginia under Gen. Robert E. Lee making its second attempt to halt the summer offensive of the United States (Union) Army of the Potomac under the command of Lieut.
Portions of the Spotsylvania Court House battlefield are now preserved as part of Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park, administered by the National Park Service.
