The Courtauld Institute of Art is a listed organisation of the University of London specialising in the study of the history of art.
It was founded in 1932 by the industrialist and art collector Samuel Courtauld, the diplomat and collector Lord Lee of Fareham, and the art historian Sir Robert Witt.
The art collection at the Institute was begun by its founder, Samuel Courtauld, who presented an extensive collection of mainly French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in 1932, which was enhanced by further gifts in the 1930s and a bequest in 1948.

The teaching is shared by three Courtauld faculty members: Dr. Paul Crossley, who is a medievalist, Dr. Georgia Clarke, who specializes in Italian Renaissance architecture, and the director of the program, John Newman, who covers post-medieval British architecture to 1914.
The Courtauld faculty is willing to advise students on their research during this time.

LONDON - The Courtauld Institute of Art announces that, following the retirement of Professor Eric Fernie at the end of the year, the new director will be Professor James Cuno, professor of history of art and architecture, Harvard University, and director of the Harvard University Art Museums.
The institute also includes the Sir Robert Witt and Lord Conway photographic libraries comprising almost two million photographs of works of art by more than 75,000 artists and over one million photographs and images of architecture, sculpture and medieval painting, respectively; as well as a library of almost 150,000 volumes.
From August 1, the Courtauld Institute of Art will become an independent College of the University of London subject to the final approval of the Council in July.

James Cuno, director of the Harvard University Art Museums, has been appointed director of the Courtauld Institute of Art to lead its transformation into an independent college of the University of London.
Hyman said that addressing the physical needs of the Art Museums will be a priority for interim leadership and for the next director.
At present HUAM is working with the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano on a renovation of the Fogg Art Museum and a master plan for the Art Museums issues.
