As a matter of politeness, the courtesy flag occupies a place in the hierarchy second only to the vessel's own national ensign, but it is primarily a signal, and thus takes the position normally reserved for that sort of flag.

I am truly irritated, as are others, when someone hangs the US flag off the flag halyard amidships, or off the bow staff designed for a pennant or burgee, and particularly when he or she does not bring in the colors at night.
Flags are pretentious and do little to show courtesy, despite the proper size, location, etc. The most respectfully flagged boat means nothing if the owner isn't respectful.
Some say a flag should be made of fabric, others say matter is the fabric of existence, aluminum is matter, therefore it could loosely be construed as fabric I guess.
