It was in these two courthouses that "gentlemen justices" (men of property and social standing, such as George Washington and George Mason), who had been appointed by the Governor of Virginia, met to carry out all the business of the county.
Virginia ceded land that was at the time part of Fairfax County, including the town of Alexandria and the Fairfax County courthouse, to be included in the new District of Columbia.
It thus became necessary to build a new courthouse for Fairfax County, and the General Assembly specified that it be located closer to the center of the county.

Many towns in Virginia are county seats whose names are formed by adding the two words "court house" to the name of the county.
Ironically, because the First Battle of Bull Run, fought on July 21, 1861, took place on the McLean farm farther north in Virginia, it can be said that the Civil War started in McLean's backyard in 1861 and ended in his parlor in 1865 (neither event, however, marked the true beginning or ending of hostilities).
McLean was a retired major in the Virginia militia, but was too old to enlist at the outbreak of the Civil War and decided to move to Appomattox Court House in order to get away from the Civil War.

Three Virginia courts serve the citizens of Fairfax County:Circuit Court, General District Court, and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court.
The Historical Fairfax Courthouse at 4000 Chain Bridge Road was built in 1800.
This courthouse is still in use today and is currently the home of the Fairfax Juvenile and Domestic Relations General District Court and Clerks Office.

Defense lawyers had argued that every resident in the two northern Virginia counties where the trials originally were to be held could be considered a victim because of the fear that gripped the area.
Muhammad and Malvo have been linked to 20 shootings, including 13 killings, in Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Washington, D.C. Prosecutors have said the killings in metropolitan Washington were part of a scheme to extort $10 million from the government.

Since Virginia has decided to send the snipers to Maryland (like they had to think about it), I would like to warn the lawyers and court personnel who frequent whatever courthouse will be doomed to hold the trials: it sucks having the sniper trials at your courthouse.
News trucks, cables, satellite uplinks, new deputies, new metal detectors, closed wings of the courthouse and huge cement potted plants in front of the courthouse doors to prevent car bombs are just some of the things that will probably disrupt your normal courthouse routines.
One of the worst things about the sniper trial in the Virginia Beach courthouse was this huge, makeshit plywood and 2x4 tunnel that was built right down the middle of the main Circuit Court hallway.

The legend "Gloucester Courthouse Virginia" may not refer specifically to the courthouse but to the location, as many southern rural areas were named by the closest landmark including courthouses (as the village of Appomattox Courthouse).
Thus, the building on the obverse may be a courthouse or possibly some other structure as a business (possibly in a home) or less likely a warehouse (a warehouse would not usually have large windows and a small front door).

Virginia law required registration of births but it was 1920 before records were even 90% complete; a copy of birth certificates held by the state can be obtained by writing the Virginia Dept. of Vital Records in Richmond.
These records are not complete as it was left up to the individual to file the discharge in his or her county of residence.
Earlier records are held at the Library of Virginia in preparation for microfilming.
