Eschewing the argument that one evil was lesser than the other, Courtois firmly asserted that both totalitarian regimes practiced "crimes against humanity" on a monumental scale.
Thus we had the strange spectacle of the French left erupting in anger after publication of Courtois’ book, which they claimed (in a throwback to the days of the Popular Front) was a new apologia for fascism.

Several designs originating from the Parisian ateliers of Courtois and Besson, in particular, dominated Périnet-valved cornet design on both sides of the Atlantic from the 1850s up to the end of the nineteenth century—and one of those designs (the Besson "Concertiste" dating from the early 1870s) became the forerunner of modern cornets.
Courtois cornets in particular captured the fancy of British musicians, thanks in no small measure to the promotional efforts of the virtuoso Koenig of Jullien's orchestra—and especially to the salesmanship of Samuel Arthur Chappell, who succeeded Jullien as a London dealer and importer of Courtois cornets (Waterhouse, 1993, p.

 Courtois Creek, Missouri
The creek is bordered by dense stands of gorgeous trees and indigenous vegetation giving it a remote feel that offers seclusion from signs of civilization in an area with abundant wildlife and little commerical or residential development.
Courtois Creek closely parallels Huzzah Creek, which has very similar characteristics, and is just north of the splendid Current River and its Jacks Fork River tributary.
Another excellent characteristic of Courtois Creek is its very close proximity to Huzzah Creek to the west, which flows into Courtois Creek just above the Meramec River confluence, so paddlers can run any of these three waterways without having to drive very far between them.

Communism did kill, Courtois and his fellow historians demonstrate, with ruthless efficiency: 25 million in Russia during the Bolshevik and Stalinist eras, perhaps 65 million in China under the eyes of Mao Zedong, 2 million in Cambodia, millions more Africa, Eastern Europe, and Latin America--an astonishingly high toll of victims.
This freely expressed penchant for homicide, Courtois maintains, was no accident, but an integral trait of a philosophy, and a practical politics, that promised to erase class distinctions by erasing classes and the living humans that populated them.
Courtois and his contributors document Communism's crimes in numbing detail, moving from country to country, revolution to revolution.

— Jacques Courtois and his brother Guillaume (1628-1679) were active in Italy and often known by the Italian forms of the names, Giacomo and Guglielmo Cortese.
Courtois is an example of a painter who has escaped notice in terms of art history, because of both his isolation from his native Franche Comté (incorporated into France by Louis XIV) and his lack of association with Italian art, even though he spent his whole career in Rome.
Courtois evolved the archetypal small battle piece, depicting plenty of violence and the smoke of combat, a format that was to remain standard right up to the end of the eighteenth century, though few of its exponents were French.

The characters they introduce are people of humble or middling station -- tradesmen, artisans, and their women-folk -- who are put through all sorts of ridiculous adventures; their vices and oddities are ridiculed smartly and with some degree of malice -- too often, also with coarseness and indecency.
