  Coutances - LoveToKnow 1911
COUTANCES, a town of north-western France, capital of an arrondissement of the department of Manche, 7 m.
Coutances is a quiet town with winding streets and pleasant boulevards bordering it on the east; on the western slope of the hill there is a public garden.
In the 17th century it was the centre of the revolt of the Nu-pieds, caused by the imposition of the salt-tax (gabelle).

 Notre Dame De Coutances
Of perhaps more magnitude, as to area, than any of the other examples, the city has the added attribute of three towered ecclesiastical edifices, which rise nobly in varying stages far over the neighbouring roof-tops of the town itself and the tree-clad slopes which embank it.
Notre Dame de Coutances is one of the few really great Gothic churches not possessing an example of those French masterworks, the rose window.
Again referring to the fine tower group, it is probably true that, were the huge central tower properly spired, the ensemble would rival Laon in regard to its impressive situation and elaborate pinnacles.

 Faith - Coutances
The logic behind Jersey's staunch loyalty to Coutances and its reluctance to come under the wing of the English church is practically rooted.
The Channel Islands spoke a language akin to the Normans, traded with the Normans, were subject to Norman customary law and were bound by ties of kinship to families in Normandy.
The Reformation saw the island embrace the French Calvinist form of Protestantism and with it the violent reaction to the symbols of the Catholic Church and its excesses.
