 McLemore's Cove
However, Rosecrans believed that Bragg was retreating on Rome and wanted his army to advance through the passes on Lookout Mountain; Crittenden in the north, McCook in the south through Winston’s Gap and Thomas in the middle through Stevens Gap.
After the battle of Chickamauga Bragg placed Hindman under arrest for not prosecuting an attack as ordered, but there would later be continuing controversy over the failure to grasp the situation on the 10th September.
While this did strengthen Negley’s position, the other 2 divisions under Thomas were still west of Lookout Mountain leaving Negley and Baird in a position that was far from healthy.

Hence, the unconformity at Rainy Cove represents a significant chunk of geological time, a gap that extends from the age of early tetrapods ("amphibians") to the age of dinosaurs (or almost), and across the Permian-Triassic mass extinction event, the most devastating of all time.
As we proceed along the beach, the unconformity dips to the north and eventually is lost to view underground, and the cliffs and beach outcrops at the end of the Cove are all composed of Wolfville Formation rocks.
At the top of the cliff, these rocks are "unconformably" overlain by gently sloping red rocks of the Wolfville Formation of the Fundy Group (Fig 6).

For a detailed account of this movement, see reports of Generals Negley and Baird, annexed, marked A and B. General Turchin, commanding Third Brigade, Reynolds' division, was pushed forward, by way of Cooper's Gap, to Negley's support, on the left, reaching his position about 10 a.m.
General Negley reports having arrived at Moore's Spring, 1¼ miles from Taylor's Store, and 2 miles from Bridgeport; he was ordered to cross the mountain at that point, it being the most direct route to Trenton, in the vicinity of which place the corps was ordered to concentrate.
