Covellite - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The name covellite is taken from N. Covelli, who in 1839 observed crystals of cupric sulphide encrusting Vesuvian lava, the mineral having been formed here by the interaction of hydrogen sulphide and cupric chloride, both of which are volatile volcanic products.
Covellite is, however, more commonly found in copper-bearing veins, where it has resulted by the alteration of other copper sulphides, namely chalcopyrite, copper-glance and erubescite.
It is found in many copper mines; localities which may be specially mentioned are Sangerhausen in Prussian Saxony, Butte in Montana, and Chile; in the Medicine Bow Mountains of Wyoming a platiniferous covellite is mined, the platinum being present as sperrylite (platinum arsenide).

Covellite - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Covellite (also know as covelline) is a crystalline form of copper sulfide (CuS).
In appearance, covellite is an enchanting indigo blue.
As described for the mineral pyrite, the assignment of formal oxidation states (or charges) to the atoms that constitute covellite is non-obvious.

 COVELLITE (Copper Sulfide)
The structure of covellite is somewhat analogous to the structures of the phyllosilicate minerals.
In covellite some of the copper ions are at the center of sulfur tetrahedrons that are linked on their bases to form sheets.
The other copper ions are combined with three sulfur ions in flat triangular groups similar to the triangular groups of the typical carbonates These triangular groups lie in a plane between the tetragonal sheets.

Covellite, a copper sulfide mineral, is rare locally, but has been found at Sterling Hill (Frondel, 1972) and may occur at Franklin as well.
Most specimens labeled covellite are mislabeled; indigo-blue tarnishes on other minerals, chiefly bornite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and franklinite, have been mislabeled as covellite.
Covellite is indigo-blue, platy with perfect cleavage, very brittle, and is found as microscopic crystals with secondary sulfides and within assemblages of altered sulfides.

Electrically conductive thermally stabilized acrylic fibrous material and process for preparing same - Patent 4781971
It is a further object of the present invention to provide an improved electrically conductive fibrous material having covellite copper sulfide in association therewith, wherein the copper sulfide is substantially entirely in the form of covellite copper sulfide.
By the term "covellite" is meant copper sulfide of a stoichiometric formula CuS, with a crystallographic structure identical to that of the copper sulfide mineral covellite of the same stoichiometry.
The covellite copper sulfide fibers thus produced have been found to have a fairly stable resistivity over time, although with fibers of relatively high resistivity, the values may be affected by variations in ambient humidity.

 Cuprian Sphalerite
Zinc and copper exhibit an inverse concentration relation, and comparison with the original sphalerite indicates that the blue phase maintains a metal: sulfur atomic ratio of approximately unity, and may probably be regarded as a cuprian sphalerite.
X-ray study of material drilled from polished section, and comprising the blue phase, sphalerite, djurleite, and covellite, revealed no lines which could not be ascribed to the last three sulfides, but the very large number of lines yielded by the djurleite could have prevented detection of the weak pattern of an additional mineral.
Where this occurs, the covellite is intimately associated, not only with minor goethite, but with several minute laths or needles of a very soft opaque mineral with strong bireflectance, from medium-yellow to pale whitish-cream (in air), and extreme anisotropism, from bright apple-green to pale gray.

The mineral covellite, one of the major ores of copper, has the formula CuS and is a simple cupric sulfide.
While a number of more complex models for the laboratory production of these minerals exists, the basic technique is to heat a given amount of copper, in combination with excess sulfur in a closed crucible under a fume hood.
Both of these minerals are found in ore deposits in nature and represent a major source of copper.

District sulfide and enargite mineral zonation patterns reveal that pyrite, covellite, and pyrite-included chalcopyrite are essentially ubiquitous in both plan view and cross section.
Spatial correlation of sulfide mineralization patterns in cross section and plan view with gold grade distribution shows that near hydrothermal breccias, the plus one (+1) ppm gold values are associated with a horizontal zone of sphalerite and galena near the base of the later secondary copper enrichment blanket.
Gold occurs as 2 micron gold grains in pyrite veinlets cut by coarse-bladed covellite mineralization.
