With the recording of their fifth studio album, 'Formulas Fatal to the Flesh', Morbid Angel have forged a testament to their conviction, once again proving that their power is solely from within and unable to be swayed by outside influence or opposing ideology.
'Covenant' proved to be a milestone, signifying that a band as uncompromisingly brutal as Morbid Angel could not only release an album inside of the major label system, but thrive in that world.
Morbid Angel have done what they do best by once again re-defining an entire genre of music and creating the new standard for a death metal band.

Morbid Angel - Progressive Death Metal
As in all Morbid Angel releases, the point of focus is the fast and flagrantly complex guitar fiendishness from Azagthoth, both in the form of architectural, nihilisitc, Slayer-style riffing and in organic solos of massive complexity.
Rhythm, as liberated in this album, freed guitar to intermix the speed of chord changes (and the form of the main riff) with the hummingbird wings of strumming frequency, in which was interwoven the wrist motion of the player, adding another layer of whipping, driving tempo to the mixture.
In this, Morbid Angel succeed with a potent album: riffs are powerful twists of phrase to render melodic similarity, drums a rigid backbone with concentric ribs, and vocals taughtly on each beat courtesy of newcome Tucker also punching out a faithful stream of eight notes.

Their debut has gone on to be unequivocally acknowledged as one of the most influential death metal albums ever recorded, a whirling vortex of searing anger and unstoppable energy.
With two already-classic albums behind them and a relentless global touring schedule, the band had become a force destined for recognition further outside of the growing death metal community.
"Heretic" is the eighth chapter in Morbid Angel's unfolding legacy and, in keeping with Morbid Angel's tradition of titling their albums alphabetically, its title begins with the eighth letter of the alphabet.

It fulfilled the promise of earlier albums like 1989's 'Altar Of Sacrifice' and 91's 'Blessed Are The Sick', and indicated a massive future for the lads.
Morbid Angel had a polished sound that so many lacked with a convincing wall of noise through ludicrous bastards like David Vincent and Azagthoth who in press photos at the time appeared to be indulging in some Nazi SS fantasy.
Tracks with blinding speed like this made Morbid Angel automatic heroes, at a point when Megadeth and Anthrax had become zeros, not even a shadow of the bands they once were.

This is probably the most contentious of the 8 albums Morbid Angel have released so far - their sixth, it was the first without long-time (and much loved) vocalist David Vincent, and is considered by many to be the point where they began to slide from the top of the death metal pile.
Vincent was a big part of the old Morbid Angel, both playing bass and managing vocals, and it was never going to be easy for his replacement, Steve Tucker, to fill his place.
I think the main point is that I don't think Morbid Angel lost it here; they made it through the departure of a long-established vocalist without really missing a beat, and put out a fine album in the process.

The album does start out with a bullshit intro of the sort so prevalent among death bands, but then "Fall From Grace" kicks off with a seriously doomy riff that soon enough blasts into the signature Morbid Angel neckbreaker speed.

Morbid Angel are, in my humble opinion, one of the finest and most consistent death metal bands ever.
Their debut album, _If Emotions Still Burn_, was promising; a solid album of a bit harsher variety of Swedish melodic death, but it suffered from poor vocals and some loose playing.
It is obvious from listening to this album's 13 bands and 68 minutes of music that each band has injected a little, or a lot, of their own style into the original Mercyful Fate song.
